TT910GO wont fire up and my pc cannot find it when plugged in.

I was presented with a TomTom 910GO for a Xmas present as I did a lot of travelling in the North of England. Also a Tour of the USA to Las Vegas and a full tour of Florida.
The machine worked very well in the US, as it fired up as soon as it got on the screen.
I have a problem now that it takes ages to fire up, and also my Lap Top cannot find the GPS when I connect it to PC, to get long needed updates to the GPS..
I have owned this GPS for about 6 years.

Let's work on the non-connection issue first. Once you are able to update, the other problem may go away.

Have you tried:
1. a different USB cable
2. a different USB port on the PC
3. a different PC.
4. all the hardware checks here (especially part 3)
