Does the TTS function require a hardware upgrade, i.e. getting a unit that's equipped with it, or can this be done through 3rd party apps or software updates?
 
nope. It's copyrighted by Loquendo.

If you want TTS on a ONE, TomTom is launching an XL*S... an XL with TTS.
