Hello,

Trying to convert to the TomTom Go app from the dedicated GPS-unit.

But no POIs are synced after logging in and activating mydrive.
All I get to sync are two places. Home and work.

Those two are the only one thats not in poi/ov2 format.

Is this some bug or by design?

I got several hundred of POIs in maybe 30 or so ov2-files.

@And sorry to say but TomTom in their wisdom have stopped allowing the use of personal POIs in their latest PNDs or Apps

Is there any work around? Convert to any other format etc? To have them all in super long list as ”favorites” is not an option. Has to be some kind of folder or other structure to sort them, like I have now in ov2-files. Also needs to be able to back-up.

The POIs are worth quite a lot to me, in work hours. And the most important reason to stay with TomTom is (or was, apparently) the ease of syncing the POIs thru MyDrive.

Its a strange direction to remove core function that make them the difference from all other GPS apps.

But if it doesn’t work with the TomTom app I could just as well going thru the hassle to import them manually to google maps, or any apple carplay compatible GPS app id guess.

Like you, I have a use model that depends heavily upon lists of different waypoints. TomTom's POI feature filled that need well for many years in their Nav2 devices. It was a late addition to Nav3, and came to Nav4 very late, and in a much less robust form. Then we got to the latest models, and the POI just never materialized.

I'm going to speak a little out of school here and mention that the early beta versions of the GO app did include POI support. This support was built upon the same framework as that of their Android based Bridge professional devices. This functionality was subsequently dropped during beta. The reason was a vague and I felt inaccurate explanation of user folder access restrictions in Android. After a lot of badgering, it was made clear that custom POI support was no longer of interest to TomTom.

I haven't any idea how this feature became such a hot potato at TomTom. Had it been some sort of late discovered patent issue, one would have thought the 20 years would have expired already, but one could imagine it running for at most another two years (the ONE V1 was introduced in 2005 with this feature, so any 'prior art' would have to predate this). Who knows?

What I do know is that another company continues to support this sort of feature in their nav devices, but do not offer an app similar to the GO app.

It is since the maps are switched to NDS format that it is no longer possible to add our personal poi.

Not true.

I am running two TomTom NDS based devices that allow for full use of custom POI, including custom icons for them. Don't be fooled by the company line.

I am using Tomtom GO application with NDS map and I cannot see my poi files which are present on Mydrive.
My question what NDS GPS do you have to see your poi?

You are correct that the GO app is NDS and that it presently does not support custom POI. In early beta (also NDS), it did. The problem is NOT the use of NDS maps, it's the NavApp code.

I have three TomTom Bridge nav units, aka Pro 8475, all Android based, two running NDS, all supporting custom POI.

I would point out that all of the current generation TomTom devices are also Android devices 'under the hood'.

Did a try with google maps. Think it was successful but have not tried it out on the roads yet.

Do not use the “list” function, instead use the my maps function.

Read somewhere that you can only have 100 POIs in each but have not tested yet.

Tried to convert to a couple of other formats first but they was not approved.

On computer:
Poieditor.com -> convert from ov2 to kml.
Go to mymaps.google.com

Add a map and name it.
Import *.kml file.

Open the google maps app on mobile.
Go to saved (or what its called in english version, middle button down).

Go to maps, select the map above.

For old GPS it happens as you write on the latest GPS (GO Discover, GO Expert, GO Exclusive) or else it is no longer possible to add poi.

I believe that TomTom was one of the first, if not the first, SatNav software companies to support third-party (aka custom) POIs; they even had proximity alerts and custom .ogg files for sounds. Unfortunately, since then, TomTom has removed support for third-party POIs

As the OP has asked this question in the iOS forum, I presume they're running TomTom GO Navigation & Maps on an iPhone. If this is the case, I've used a third-party app for years called POIViewer. POIViewer isn't free, but it is under £5.00 and is worth it.
I keep all of my POIs in master Excel spreadsheets and extract the necessary data of longitude, latitude, and POI name to a .CSV file (or an .OV2 file) and send it to POIViewer. iMazing for Windows or Mac makes transferring files to and from an iPhone easy.

POIViewer stores the POIs, and you can launch TomTom GO Navigation & Maps from POIViewer. POIViwer will use most SatNav apps on your iPhone.
