with the limited memory in the XXL variants, is it possible to store maps on a PC/Mac and swap between this and TomTom as required?. I need access to both Europe and US but obviously not bth at the same time!. I know I could buy the WTE version but it's not readily available.

Yep, use Explorer or Finder (Mac) to copy the relevant map folder to the computer and copy the other map to the unit.
