Instructions (No images)

Before you start, make sure you have registered with My TomTom and your TomTom has a wireless data connection via your phone.

Tap once in the driving screen to go the main menu. Then tap the blue (more) arrow once or twice to get to the option TomTom PLUS services:

Select TomTom PLUS services, then select TomTom Buddies

TomTom Buddies has two screens with a range of options and features. You can browse through them with the blue (more) arrow.

With TomTom Buddies you can (click on a feature to find out more):

Invite a friend to become a buddy.
Show your buddies on the map.
Request an up-to-date position from a buddy.
Send a text message to a buddy.
Send a location to a buddy.
Read your message Inbox and Outbox.
Hide your position on the map.
Delete a buddy from your list.
Invite a friend to become a buddy
The more Buddies the better. The first thing you have to do is to invite your friends to become buddies. Select ?Invite new Buddy? and then enter your buddy?s email address:

Tap ?Done? and an invitation is sent to your friend. If your friend is not registered with TomTom you will receive a message. If they are registered already, they will receive an invitation:

You can have up to 128 buddies in your buddy list

Show your Buddies on the map
If your friend accepts you will receive a confirmation message. Now you can show his or her position on the map. Tap ?Show Buddy on map? and you will get a list of your Buddies.

Tip: every time you send an invitation, ask for a location update, or send a message or location to one of your buddies, your current location is updated on the Buddy Server. The same applies to your buddies. You buddy list is also stored on the server. The more active you and your buddies are the more up-to-the-minute your locations will be.

Colored icons tell you the latest buddy location information:

Buddy is available; position is up-to-date (at most 15 minutes old).
Buddy is available; position is out-of-date (between 15 and 60 minutes old).
Buddy is available; position is old (older than 60 minutes).
Buddy is unavailable; he/she has not responded to invitation yet.
Buddy is currently unavailable.

If you tap on ?Update?, either at the bottom of the buddy list or in the main TomTom Buddies menu, the latest known information on your buddy?s location is downloaded to your device. Buddy icons will change, depending on how active they are.

Clicking on a buddy name will show their position on the map:

You can click on any buddy on your map and see his or her name and last update status. Your position is shown by the compass icon. If you tapped on an unavailable buddy you will receive a message.

If the buddy you tapped is located somewhere outside the range of your map you will receive a message.

Requesting an up-to-date position
If you click ?Update? in the buddy list or in the start menu of TomTom Buddies, your device will download the most recent locations from the Buddy Server. If your buddies haven?t been active recently these positions can become out of date. You can actively request an up-to-date position from your buddy by selecting the blue (more) arrow in the TomTom Buddies start menu and selecting ?Update Buddy?. Then select the buddy you want updated from your buddy list.

The server will send a request for an update to your buddy?s device. If this is switched on it will retrieve your buddy?s current location and update the on-line buddy list. It will then push the updated location to your device and show a message:

Sending text messages to Buddies
You can send a text message to any of your buddies at any time. Simply select the blue (more) arrow in the start menu of TomTom Buddies then select ?Send Buddy a message? and select the buddy from your list. Then compose your message:

Write the message. When you're finished, select ?Done? to send the message.

The message is then sent to the Buddy Server which will look after delivery. If, for any reason, his/her device is switched off then the message will still get through as it is is saved on the server and sent as soon as the buddy switches on and uses TomTom Buddies.
If your friend is navigating then he or she will hear an alert and see an envelope in the navigation screen. Tapping the envelope will display the message.

If your friend is using TomTom Buddies then an alert will play and he/she can select ?Read messages? then ?Inbox? then the message.
If your friend?s device is switched off, the message will arrive as soon as he or she switches on and does an update.

Share a place
If you have found a great shop or restaurant or you want to meet somewhere special, you can send your buddy the location. Select ?Send Buddy a location?, select the buddy you want to share it with, then pick the location type just like in normal navigation mode:

Once you have picked the location the message will be sent.

Your buddy can then read the message and either navigate to the location, view it on the map or add it to his/her own personal favorites on the device, using the ?Options? button

Checking your Inbox and Outbox
All Buddy messages are stored in the Inbox and Outbox on your TomTom device.
Please note that your SMS messages are also stored in these mail boxes.
To read the content of your Inbox and Outbox you select the blue (more) arrow in the Start screen of TomTom Buddies and select ?Read messages?:

Open the mailbox you want:

Click a message to read it.

Tap ?Options? to forward the message to a buddy or any mobile.

Hide your position on the map
You won?t always want to be found, and TomTom Buddies protects your privacy, so you can hide your position from your buddies at any time. Simply select ?Hide your own position? in the TomTom Buddies start menu. Your buddies will no longer be able to get an update on your current position. It?s as if you have switched off your device.

Of course you can reveal your position again at any time.

Tip: ?Hide your own position? will not delete your most recent position from the Buddy Server, so your buddies will still be able to see the last registered position.

Delete Buddy
You can delete a buddy at any time. Select the blue (more) arrow in the start screen of TomTom Buddies then select ?Delete Buddy?. Your buddy list appears so that you can select the buddy you want to delete. Confirm that this is really what you want to do and the buddy you deleted will receive a message.

Deleting a buddy means that this buddy will disappear from your buddy list on the server and you will disappear from his/hers. The next time they do an update you will disappear from their map and they will disappear from yours.

If you want to reverse this you will need to re-invite your friend using the ?Invite new Buddy? option.

I would be great on long hauls with friends (motorcycle and car), but unless some of the cell companies open things up, then many people won't have the plan required to get the data access working with the TomTom.

I for one have Verizon and am not really willing to pay $40.00 a month so I can see where my buddies are located. Maybe when I get a new phone this fall, I'd consider that as a "niceity", but then again, all my motorcycle buddies have Garmin's (the older ones).

For what we pay with Verizon, you would think that this little extra could be included!

No Kidding... My bill is about $180.00 a month. (5 phones). AT&T will probably be getting a call this fall when the current Verizon contract expires, but that's only because I want a crackberry so I can get my corporate e-mail on it. That will release me from my desk a bit. :D;)
