I'm just getting started with a 920 and am looking for a little advice.

I've had limited experience with a borrowed One and a 720, I chose the 920 because of Amazon.com's price drop, plus I like having all the extras even if I don't really need them and probably won't use most of them.

From reading different posts I learned that I should do a manual backup, which I performed following the directions on the TomTom website. Just to check my backup copy is 3.58gb, 51 folders, 1121 files is this right?

What if anything should I do next?

Does the battery need to be fully discharged between chargings for better performance?

Which SD card should I buy? How large can I go?

I don't really plan on travelling to Europe anytime soon, so could I copy the map to an SD card in order to free up space.

There isn't much available space left on my device and I haven't even done anything yet.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The battery does NOT need to be discharged between chargings; you can keep it docked to your computer if you desire.

Many 920 users have 8 gig sdhc cards; some have 16 gigs. Your suggestion about copying the European map is a good one. Unless you have a million mp3's you want to put on your unit, I would think an 8 gig card is quite sufficient.

You already done the most important thing: make a complete backup. You've also done a wise thing by a) joining this forum and b) not being reluctant to ask questions. There are a bunch of users ready to help.

(make sure you've done a full battery charge of 2-4 hours on your new unit).

Now, go out and play a bit witth it.......learn what it does for you and what it doesn't, or not easily.

Welcome aboard.

I am also in this situation as I just purchased a new 920 from the great deal at Dell. I know the cd with HOME is outdated. Should I just go to the website and download the new version:confused:

In regards to the updates;

What is the current version of HOME?

What is the latest map version?

Firmware 7.481 ... is it now okay to download:confused:

Thanking you in advance fro any guidance here.

Just install HOME, it will ask you if you want to upgrade to the latest version and it will get the updates and install them itself.

Just make sure you read the forums so you know what you're getting into if you buy an sdhc card. Tomtom really only supports SD cards and you have to do some jerry-rigging to get the SDHC cards to work. I just ordered a 16 GB SDHC card and hope it all goes smoothly when I follow everyone else's instructions. I wanted to extra space because I plan to install additional software on my tomtom so that I can download and watch movies on it as well as listen to music.

As the first poster mentioned - make sure you do a complete backup of the unit. Some of us suggest you do it with Windows' Explorer (or mac equal) and make sure that you show all files including hidden/readonly/system since there are a few files on the device that are not just standards.

Some folks have had issues with the newest TT firmware so you might want to still wait on that.

Latest map is 7.15, I think.

TT has shorted some of us US users and only allowed updates for the US maps and not Europe!!!!!

Just a few more questions:

Which sd/sdhc card should I get? What size?

Do I need to buy a sd card writer to use it?

Should I upgrade my software? Version 7.221 came on the unit

I've seen a lot of info in the forums almost too much. This "newbie" needs simple step by step instructions.

Thanks for all the info already provided.

Some users have a 16 gig sdhc for their 920 unit

Do I need to buy a sd card writer to use it?
I think it advisable as your unit may not be able to write to all 16 gigs though it can read from the complete card

Should I upgrade my software? Version 7.221 came on the unit

I don't think there is a compelling reason to upgrade at this point; some users are having 'issues' with .481 that they did not encounter with .221

My 920 came with Map Version v710.1576, I see on TomTom Home that version 7.15 is available, which I should be able to get with the latest Map guarantee.
If I download the new map, does it automatically get saved to my computer? I downloaded a voice and a new car symbol, and both of these were automatically saved to my computer, does the map work the same way?
If not how can I backup the map to my computer? If I copy the "North America" folder from my device to my computer, is this sufficient? Or do I need to copy additional files? I already have a manual backup of the device as it came out of the box without any updates.
Thanks

Anything dl from TT does first get saved to your computer. The default path is set in TTHome--Tools--Preferences--Folder Locations:

If you haven't changed it, you'll find your dl map here:

C:\Documents and Settings\(yourname)\My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Downloads\map\NorthAmerica

You may want to:
1. Copy your existing 710 map folder to another location on your computer ... just in case
2. After the dl and installation of the 715 map, besides a TTHome backup, make a complete unit backup using Explorer to a different location.

Finally, if you have dl poi's and installed them in your 710 map, you'll need to copy the .ov2 and .bmp files from the (backed up) 710 to the (installed) 715 map; as well, if you've created favourites in the 710 map, you'll need to copy the MapSettings.cfg file from the 710 to the 715 map to restore them.
