Display distance different than spoken distance

I just got my Tomtom One XL-S yesterday but had borrowed one over the past week and noticed this in both units. My drive to work takes me through some back roads and when I get to my on ramp for I-75, the display shows that I have 8 miles to my exit which is correct but the spoken directions says to stay on the interstate for 11 miles. Any ideas on why this is?

I suspect that once you take your exit, you still have 3 more miles along the interstate before your final get-off.

No, in fact once I get close enough for the Tomtom to let me know to get off the interstate they are synced back up.
