Confused about phones and One XL

I bought a One XL recently and need a new phone. I went to the TomTom website and looked under compatability and it showed a lot of phones but the only check marks were under plus services. According to the page you can't use hands free or anything other than plus services. I called support and she said if I bought plus services I could find out the weather and such. I told her if I was driving I could look out the window and see the weather.

So if I get a compatable phone I really can't use it with TomTom XL??
