I have a TomTom GPS unit that I bought probably 10 years ago. Behind the power-in connector it says Model 4EN42, under that is Z1230, another line says C/N o: AP1441A02580, then another line 4EN4.001.02

When I access some of the menu items I see the following:

Map: USA_Canada v890.4241, release date 4/2012

On the App line is a date (7/13/2018).

I remember updating it a few years ago for some technical reason, but I either didn't or couldn't update the maps.

I understand that some of these have free map updates and some don't. How can I know what I have? I'd like to know before I go down a rabbit hole installing software on my PC, creating an account with TomTom, etc.

AP is a Start 20, 4 GB + micro-sdhc, MyDrive Connect
or a VIA 1400, 4 GB + micro-sdhc, MyDrive Connect NAV3 you can buy a map on the Tomtom website to update it.

Can I install a free OpenStreetMap on my TomTom device? Some internet guides say it can be done, with some conversion software.

No, it is not possible to install OpenStreetMap on a Tomtom GPS, we do not have access to the GPS memory.
