TT 720 File issues...

TomTom Model(s)
Go 720
I've had my TT 720 for almost 26 hours now. After having it for only 2 hours, I thought it would be very smart to view the unit through windows explorer. While viewing the files, even the hidden ones, I then thought it would be an even smarter idea to DELETE everything.

I can hear you all now...

*DEET-DA-DEE* - "Damn TT Newbs!" :p

Anyways, after having to call TomTom Support to have my map file authorized on my Plus account and then re-install everything through HOME it is finally working again.

The only thing I would really like to do is restore my unit to it's out of the box state. I notice that I am missing some files and options that the unit had before I got my "intelligent" hands on it. The other thing I notice is that when I look at the unit through explorer again, it shows my TT as "INTERNAL" with a bland icon. I remember it used to say TOMTOM and have the red hands icon.

Is there a website I can download all the files a new unit comes with?

Thanks for your time. And a word to any of the other TT-Virgins...

DONT PLAY WITH THE DAMN FILES...YOU WILL GET HAIRY PALMS AND GO BLIND! :D

Now you know why we suggest users do a full Explorer, not Home, backup prior to doing **anything** with their unit.

You could try to restore to factory settings. That option is on page 8 of preferences. Also do a pin reset. (Try that first). Then dock the unit, start Explorer and see if you can see the TT logo displayed within Explorer.

I've tried the pin-reset (holding the reset for 15+ seconds and then holding the power button for 5+ seconds) and it didn't add any files to the unit.

Once I was able to get the unit functioning again, I tried the restore to factory settings option under preferences. Sadly, this seemed to only change my settings and did not delete or add any files.

My unit still says "INTERNAL" in explorer.

If anyone has a copy of their "explorer back-up" I would be forever grateful. If this is considered piracy however, it's really not that big of a deal.

Thanks again for all your help everyone!

:D

You can use Home, uninstall the firmware, ignore the warning, select Update my unit, and Home will offer the firmware again to select , donload and install.

But make the backup FIRST!

I basically had to do that in order to get my unit functioning again in the first place. Still no luck.

I am using firmware version 8.30 and map version 8.15 at the moment.

Any thoughts?

Well, if you are comfortable playing around with Control Panel--Admin Tools-->Computer Management-->Disk Management, you could try seeing what it shows for the drive when the gps is docked.

I tried your advice and found nothing of substance provided by the disk management tool. If you are looking for specific information, please let me know and I will provide it to you.

I thought creating this thread with a more straight forward request would make it easier for others to assist me. I don't really understand why the thread was locked.

Back to the topic at hand...

When I viewed the GPS unit in Disk Management, it displayed a horizontal box with the drive letter designation. I did not notice any other information that could not be obtained from the properties selection.

  • I've tried your suggestions.
  • I've tried others suggestions that I call TomTom Support (Watertown, NY).
  • I've tried to contact TomTom Corporate offices in Concord, MA hoping they could provide or sell me a CD containing the pre-loaded data. The receptionist simply transfered me to TomTom support (Watertown, NY).
  • I've tried hard resetting the unit (holding the reset button for 1 minute, then holding the power button till a BIOS-like screen was displayed). It turned on and neither deleted or restored any files or settings.
  • I've tried soft resetting the unit (turning the unit on and selecting restore to factory settings). This only deleted settings and locations.
  • I've tried using TomTom's flash tool. I have no clue what it did/does, but it did not resolve my issue.

I have no idea what else I can do now other than to ask fellow forum users for a copy of their original back-up. I am open to any and all suggestions however...I only ask they be specific.

Thanks again everyone.

I just don't think what you are requesting would work. Certain files on each unit are SPECIFIC to that unit regarding device id, etc.

Even if you were to get a copy of someone else's backup and restore it on your unit, the data in files wouldn't not match the hardware code of your unit. I think you'd be back at square one.

I understand your position but I respectfully disagree.

You're allowing an assumption you've made to possibly persuade others from offering their assistance.

The "worst-case scenario" with using someone else's original back-up is my unit simply does not work. I then am back to square-one as you said.

The "best-case scenario" with using someone else's back-up is that my unit's COMPLETE functionality and options are restored. The benefits this has to the community are priceless in my opinion. Support communities could then archive original data configurations so that its members have a safe alternative should their unit fail. Support communities could archive these "back-ups" and provide them freely or charge for them.

The "middle-of-the-road" scenario with using someone else's original back-up is that some of the files work and some of the files do not. Again, there are community benefits here as well. We then have a broader understanding of what files are linked to a specific unit.

A lot of innovations have been the result of trial and error, or even trial and surprise. Vulcanized Rubber, Silly-Puddie, and Krazy-Glue originated by complete accident.

I'm not saying that by you suggesting my solution would ultimately fail could result is the world missing out on the next Silly-Puddie. All I am saying is...what is the harm in trying?

At the very least, I think that it will replace some of the minor files (such as the splash screen, sounds options, and auto-run instructions for a windows OS) that are missing from my unit.

All that being said, I do appreciate your time and assistance.

Thanks again!

First of all, when you request for help, please do request at ONE place, not more than one. If mod. spot another same request, they will close because there is NO reason to answer twice.
Secondly, while I understand your frustration getting your device back and running, as you can clearly see, dhn is the ONLY ONE who spends time to help you. What else do you want? or you can PM other members who have not participated in this particular thread to help out.
Thirdly, you played with your toy, you screw it up, you called Tomtom CSR for help, they were nice enough to put it back, at least as you said, your device "is finally working again". What else do you ask for???
You asked for the "virgin" gps??? Did you read my respond?
Fourthly, each map locked into a specific gps device, so even if you find "another virgin bundle" you still cannot. I stop short right here because you may go on and say you can hack it, yes, yes.
Fifthly, if I have it, the virgin one, I wouldn't want to give out to you, not because I'm cheap, I'm selfish, but I know they (some files) contain my private info such Device ID, Serial number, ....... You don't want to give out yours, do you?
Lastly, I just provide my best effort to help you through, I do hope you can find the "virgin" somewhere in this forum or other fora.

I did not know that these units contain personal/unit information in the files.

While I would think a virgin copy would not contain any personaly identifiable information, I do see the risk in my idea because of the private unit information.

This is my first GPS unit of any kind. I simply didn't understand how easy it is to wipe these units out. When I saw the options to reset your unit to its factory conditions, I assumed it meant everything.

Lesson learned...unfortunately, it was learned the hard-way.

Thanks for all the help.

How about we start here... a list of a typical TT720's internal directory. Tell me what you are missing, and unless it is proprietary or contains personal data, I'll find a way to pass it along. I've tried to remove any extraneous "add on" stuff. Let's start with the obvious stuff. Heaven help the formatting if TomTomForums doesn't permit use of the VBulletin "code" tag here... If not, we should request this from the moderator.
