Is the battery fully charged on the unit?

Try a drum reset on the unit by holding the power button about 20 seconds till you hear the drum sounds.

Have you tried it with Voice guidance at Settings disabled?

Are you 100% certain that you've got solid external power to the unit? You don't see the little battery indicator in the lower left of the screen, do you?

At least give it a try while you are still at home.

That sounds like you are still using it on battery power. If so, please humour us and try it on external power, just as an experiment.

Agreed, Andy. It sounds like he has a power issue.

Again, to the OP: "Are you 100% certain that you've got solid external power to the unit? You don't see the little battery indicator in the lower left of the screen, do you?"
