hi iv recently updated sd card on my tomtom carminat and when i put the sd card back in the sat nav i now have an egg timer with green screen and can not remove it any suggestions on why this keeps happening

1) What update was performed, was it performed on the original (previously working) card, and did it complete successfully? and

2) do you mean you are unable to physically remove the card?, and

3) Is the card looking normal when viewed on your PC?

Please also specify the first two characters of your Carminat's serial number so we can know which of two versions of firmware is should be running. We will likely point you to the correct firmware and have you load that manually onto your card.

first two letter of the serial number is IA

OK. The "IA" version is not a "Live" version, so that tells us which firmware it should be using (8.843).
With your card installed in your PC. and using your favorite text editor, please check the file on the card called ttgo.bif for line that reads
ApplicationVersionVersionNumber=
and tell us whether the number is indeed 8443.

Then let me know what version of operating system you are running on your PC so we can locate look at the last firmware that was downloaded. I'm hoping you are on the same PC that you used to download the last update.

OK. You are a very important version down from where you need to be in any case. 8443 (January 2019) release resolved the 'week number rollover' problem that many units from many manufacturers had that upset the ability to know the correct time.

Please go to the folder C:\Users\{yourusername}\Documents\TomTomUpgrade\HOME\Download\complete\program and advise what you find inside there. Let's see whether that version was ever downloaded, or if it still needs to be done. We're going to be reloading the firmware on your device in any case, so might as well make it a recent one.

im struglling to find where that is how do i find that on my tomtom home im using

Open the folders in the order specified, starting with "This PC", C, Users, etc. until you get down to the 'program' folder.
That's where Home stores any newly downloaded firmware during updates.

No problem. That means that Home never did download the new firmware that your device needs.
I would recommend making sure you have the most recent copy of Home (be sure it is 2.20) and installing your SD card into your PC again to see if you can pick up a fresh copy of the firmware.
Home should be recommending an update to 8443. If it does not, let us know.

Hmmm.. why is Home not suggesting the correct version number for you, I wonder?

Straight from TomTom:

Version 8.843
Released on 23 January 2019 This update applies to: Carminat TomTom
  • Bug fixes and improvements: Various performance improvements and bug fixes have been implemented.
  • This update prepares your navigation device for the week number rollover in April 2019 which has an impact on GPS.
When was the last time that you had fully updated your device?
What update were you trying to perform when this thread started? What updates were being offered, and what actually completed?

With Home running, select "Manage my device" and select the tab "Install Items from computer". What categories are listed there? And how recently have you changed computers?
If we don't find anything on your PC, and Home is refusing to see the correct update, you're going to be stuck dealing with tech support at TT to get their back end straightened out so as to offer you the right code.

That said, there's the option of reloading what you already have, and there is an external source for that firmware, but let's try to do this the right way, first.

i first tried to update it in january but same thing hapend so left it and now tried at the start of the week

iv got maps, applications, and postcodes on the items on computer

pc has been the same for both upgrade attempts

Whoa... what is the "application" that Home says on your PC? It should have been in the folder Download\complete\program that we discussed earlier!

Open up home again, and select "Manage My Device", and the "Install Items from computer", select "Applications" and click on the little "More info" at the right of the description. That will open up a page that shows what it knows about the application that is still loaded on your PC. Let's find out what version that is.

Right then. So Home says it has a copy of 8.843 in your PC somewhere, though not at all where I would have expected it to be stored, and your device's SD card indicates in the ttgo.bif file that 8.841 is still loaded on the card. Let's try to square this away, shall we? We're going to get that 8.843 on your PC to your SD card one way or another.

Since I seem to have blown the location of the folder where Home is storing this copy of 8.843, let's ask Home where the heck it put it, and if it appears to indeed be stored on your PC intact, but in some unexpected place, we'll either get home to load it properly to your card or we can do it manually if need be.

Open Home again (sorry).

At the top bar, select "Tools" and then "Home Preferences", then "Folders".
The first line is "Download". Click the "Browse" button out to the right. Select the folder called "complete".
Now what folders do you see? The list provided before didn't include one that would have had the 8.843 firmware in it.

OK! The folder name isn't quite what I expected, but "programe" it is!

Let's start with Home to see if we can do this the easy/normal way.
With the card installed, open up Home again, select "Manage my device", select "Install items from computer", and select "Programe" or "Applications" or whatever sounds like it would contain the code for your Carminat.
You should see one or more versions of firmware listed there. Selecting "More info" at the right for any listed items, Home should bring up a screen that describes the program. One of them should identify as 8.843.
Once you find the one for 8.843, click the "Add" button to the right to install it.

The above assumes Home could see the firmware. If it did NOT, then let me know, and we will dig into the "programe" folder that you found (keep track of where you found it!) and we will install the firmware manually to your card.
