how do i restore my favorites after new map install on a mac ?

Copy the file called 'MapSettings.cfg' from your old map folder (I hope you have a backup of it!) into the new one.

For the future, consider converting your Favourites into a user-POI category instead. It will be much less prone to "going missing" after a map update.

Just for info, you haven't mentioned what model you are using (or what country you come from) This is ALWAYS useful to know on forums like this as the techniques needed sometimes vary by model.
On the more recent models/software versions, they have sorted out this issue in the vast majority of cases.
