2D View Question

While driving last week on a long boring stretch of highway I thought it might be interesting to change into 2D mode and zoom out and set up a sort of map view of current position but with enough scale that our destination was also visible on the map. I was able to zoom out so that there was about 100 miles across the screen. For some reason however a few seconds after setting the zoom out the TT would automatically zoom back in to a very narrow 2D view. I was not able to find any setting that would make it hold at the wide zoom setting. Has any one else ever tried this and if so did you have the same results?
