Sorry if this has been asked before, but the search didn't bring anything up.

My TomTom Smart suffered complete battery failure about 3 years ago. I finally got round to fitting a new battery and it started up without problem. It did still say it was in France where it stopped working. I updated the maps and with Connect and everything seemed fine, but it just won't find a satellite connection. I've done a factory reset and the full recovery procedure, but still no luck.

Any suggestions much appreciated!

The satellites will have moved considerably from their positions when it failed. It may take a long time for it to re-find them. I do not know the Smart but my old One XL has a file called QuickFixGPS which can still be updated and gives the latest satellite locations

Hi Tony

"It may take a long time for it to re-find them"

You're right - I plugged it in and left it in the conservatory. When I went to check 2 hours later, it was just connecting and then came up with the 'lets go' message!

I'm guessing when it was new it was initially programmed with the rough coordinates of the satellites, but starting from nothing, it really did take a couple of hours.

I'd read about the QuickFixGPS but it didn't come up as an available update. I assumed it would be included in the recovery procedure, but maybe not.

Hopefully it's fixed anyway, so thanks for your help

When a GPS device has no idea where the satellites are (which happens when it's been sitting for years!) it can take as much as 10 minutes or so in clear sky view to pick up the 'almanac' from one of the satellites that gives the device enough of an idea as to where things are to get a location fix. It's like a new-out-of-box experience.
