rider 550
Hello,
I have just purchased a rider 550 which works ok except it will not connect to traffic despite pairing my iPhone 15 successfully, I have spoken to Apple, TomTom and EE the network provider and it appears to be something to do with APN settings but no one can make it work! Has anyone here successfully connected a rider 550 to an iPhone 15? Ps traffic works fine if I’m on wifi just not via phone.
Thanks in advance
Andy

Hi there @Bike rider and welcome to the forum.
First of all, go to your iPhone settings, then make sure
1. WiFi is Off.
2. Bluetooth is On.
3. Mobile Data slider switch is to the right and showing a green colour (On).
4. Turn on Personal Hotspot and within the settings, slide “Allow others to Join” to the right which then turns green, then in the popup that follows choose “Bluetooth and USB Only” and NOT “Turn on WiFi”
Essentially, using the “Bluetooth and USB Only” pairing hotspot in your iPhone settings allows for a single stable connection and has less of a drain on your iPhone’s battery compared to the WiFi hotspot setting.
Next:

1. - Delete the MyDrive app on your iPhone
2. - Delete old Bluetooth pairings of the Rider on your iPhone
3. - Connect the Rider to your iPhone via Bluetooth over the standard way (press the “No” request to download and use the MyDrive app to set up the Bluetooth connection)
4. - DO NOT pair your Rider via the MyDrive app if you later decide to install
5. - In your Rider settings, “forget” the current WiFi connection as this will only be required for downloads and likely to take priority over the Bluetooth connection.
6. - Within the Rider Bluetooth menu settings for the connected iPhone, I have Data for Traffic & other services turned on but NOT for Smartphone messages OR “See who is calling” and if your headset allows it, High quality (A2DP).
7. - You are still able to install and use the MyDrive app (signed into your account) afterwards and use it for sending destinations/routing but importantly - don’t pair your Rider within the MyDrive app.

The problem lies within the MyDrive app (pairing through the app).

*Apple introduced new Bluetooth security permissions from iOS 13 and TomTom had tried to modify the MyDrive app to make the two separate Bluetooth connections work effectively for traffic data and calls/texts, but is now unlikely to be resolved.

I am using my Rider 500, (a Sena 5s communication system and iPhone 12 Pro Max **paired directly for music/calls), a Tile Pro Bluetooth tracker AND 2 Apple AirTags alongside this way successfully for the last 4 years and no loss of the traffic connection.

**Note to Mod. - advise move to Rider Specific Issues.

Thanks Kieron, I will give that a go when I get home, wasted enough time at work on it today hahahaha

Hi @Bike rider -
If Bluetooth doesn’t work for you, your iPhone hotspot and WiFi setting will work too. Personally, I don’t need both active and it saves my iPhone battery as I don’t have it “bolted” to the bike charging whilst riding.
Heard too many stories of damaged cameras through vibration. (Have a portable power bank in the rucksack).
Don’t hesitate for any further advice if needed.

Hi @Bike rider -
As @Willy875 suggests, it could be the TT servers having a “moment”, are you using your EE provider on your iPhone? Just fired my Rider 500 up - took about 3 mins for it to settle and all ok here on o2 in North Oxfordshire.

Hi @Kieron M , tried again this morning and still no joy, it seems to connect fine to the hotspot on the phone it appears that it cant connect over the network, i am using EE and wonder if that is the issue as they said they do not support APN (?) but im not convinced they really know.

Hi @Bike rider -

Sometimes I have also used the 1p mobile sim in an iPhone (piggy backs off of the EE network) for traffic data, so EE should be fine. If you go into Settings on your iPhone, then Mobile Service, Mobile data should be on (green slider), then as your Personal Hotspot is showing on, tap Mobile Data Network - here is where the APN should be, as well as Username and Password (which should be blanked out). Scrolling down, you should also be able to see the Visual Voicemail, MMS and Personal Hotspot APN’s.
Your mobile network operator uses the APN settings to connect to a secure gateway, assign your device an IP address, and connect it to the internet. Most of the time, users don't need to interfere with their device's APN settings.

Hello @Kieron M
Im Gonna give up now, if I hadn't bought it second hand of a work colleague it would be going back!
Tried one last time;
disconnected wifi and everything else on bluetooth and phone
phone connects fine but the hotspot symbol on the phone (two linked green rings) comes on and goes off
when its on traffic says service unavailabe
when its off traffic says no internet
in both cases phone shows as connected.

Kind of wish i hadnt tried to save money and got a new garmin......OH well

was thinking of selling it and getting a quad lock but there seems to be an issue with them destroying moble phone cameras with OIS even if one uses vibration damper.

Thanks for all your help though

Hi @Bike rider -
Please try this now - you had earlier in your posting stated that it had connected to WiFi - was this your home WiFi?
Instead of trying Bluetooth, we need to try the WiFi Hotspot.
Go to Settings, then Personal Hotspot, Allow Others to Join, then tap “Turn on WiFi”
Now go to the Rider settings and link to your phone over WiFi. At the bottom of the Personal Hotspot settings, where it shows “Maximise Compatibility”, my slider is off. (not showing green).

Another thing that also happens when turning on your WiFi Personal Hotspot (which is going to use your phone data plan as the source for traffic/camera data) is that it also turns on the WiFi setting that your phone may use to connect to the internet at home etc. Make sure in the iPhone Settings, that this is Off otherwise your iPhone will be connecting to anything you have recently connected to (saved) and also that the Personal Hotspot “Allow Others to Join” slider is still showing green.

@Kieron M
had another go at weekend and failed again, tried bluetooth and wifi and no luck, phone connects fine and it even says connected for data and traffic services but the little traffic icon has a x on it and when i click on that it says service not available. I guess i am doing something wrong. Guess i will use it without traffic or sell it and try a garmin.

Thanks for your help

Apparently your rider is not connecting to the Tomtom server.

If you go to Mydrive can you send a route or favorite from Mydrive to your rider?
