Sure do need a link (primer) for newbies like me. There are many questions that, I think, can best be answered in some sort of matrix/graph/spreadsheet ... whatever (A FAQ might help). I am using a TT One XL.
For Example:

Which map files are current for which TT?
Which POI files go with which TT's map files?
How do I know which Edition/Version of TT I have?
How does one use an SD card as the map holder?
How does one make the SD card the sole map holder (ie copy over the original map files?)
What map file(s) must be in which folders for which type/Edition/Version/Revision TT?

I'm just anew kid on the block reading and trying digest the info presented here but it seems so fragmented and frustrating as I find myself studying and reading threads only to learn later it is not pertinent to my TT ... even when I am in the TT One area (That is what I think I have ... don't know the edition). I have made many uploads to map corrections and now I'd like to step out of that shell and do more. I am rather competent with Windows but completely embarrassed by my ignorance of fundamental TT usage (file transfers and the like).

Thanks for any help you can offer.
Dr Dan :)

Here's a link to a site where there are various links to reviews of the One Xl.

Go to this link to see how to find out what is the latest map for your model.

Further, poi files always go directly in the specific map folder. You can find what application version you have by tapping the satellite bars. The next screen shows the version of the APPLICATION. Now, tap the version number and the next screen shows the map installed, the version and the build.

If you have a One XL to use the SD card all files and folders need to be present on the SD card otherwise the device will not boot up, I am not too surprised you find it confusing as to which device you have got as there are well over ten different version of the One product range! - TomTom Home should give you a clue though by reporting a device ID on the PC Screen, otherwise open the ttgo.bif file with NotePad and this will offer the device type along with lots of additional information - Mike
