TomTom Model(s)
One 3rd Edition
Hi - new member. Using an old TomTom ONE 3rd Edition, been very pleased with it but want to replace it with something more modern and a larger screen. I also holiday in West Australia for 3 months every year and include a trip to Adelaide in South OZ so it will have to accommodate OZ maps as well as UK. Don't need Europe as I don't drive there any more.

Suggestions (clean!) welcome. Not too expensive as a hard up pensioner I can only afford 5 holidays in addition to OZ.

Maybe this one:

One of the few models available on the old platform (meaning the user still has access to the file system). Although it only has 2gb storage and no sd slot, you probably can fit an Aussie map on internal as well as UK&ROI or, if not, it isn't hard to move your existing map to the computer to make room for the Oz map.

And it has a 5" screen.

It sounds as though TomTom have moved backwards instead of forwards. I'd have expected to find an up to date model, not an old one, where all you have to do is connect to the PC and download a new map to add to the existing UK one then use it in whichever country you are in. Instead you have to a computer specialist and mess about removing the UK map then installing the Ozzie one. Simplicity seems to have gone out of the window. Better stick to my old ONE 3rd Edition me thinks.

Also not very good if you want to use the sat-nav to get to the airport in OZ, fly to the UK and switch on to get you somewhere. You'd have to carry the computer in order to do so. What happened to modern technology? It hasn't progressed.

Do new models have an sd slot? Therefore why not have UK maps on one card and Ozzie maps on another, then simply swap cards?

Both the UK&ROI as well as the map of Australia will fit easily within the 2 gb storage on the unit. No computer needed. You just switch maps when you get to the UK.

Many thanks for your time and patience. Is there another, more up to date model than an XXL? that both maps will fit on? At almost 75 the brain doesn't work as well as it used to. Past sell by date methinks.

Thanks dhn - now starting to think that any model that I choose will be able to take both sets of maps and simply select the one that I want to use at the time. Or isn't it that simple? That's what I do with my current model.

Of course I could leave the old ONE in OZ for use when here, and buy a new one for the UK only.

At least having help on this forum I won't buy blind and finish up with something that won't work properly.

Am I missing something? I can't find, in the spec for various models, whether you can enter a six item postcode for UK destinations or a Map reference to find a location as I can with my ONE 3rd edition. TomTom web pages seem a bit short of full information regarding the above.

Hi,

if you get a NAV2 device (connecting via TT Home) you'll just have to add the zip folder as up to now with your ONE.
If you get a NAV3 device (Start 20 / VIA / Go 8xx/1xxx/2xxx series) I don't know how that is done. There should be a postcode file included with the map for those devices but in another forum we found out that it doesn't seem to work properly yet. So it might be just a user having done something wrong or that it really doesn't work yet.

There are reasons for and against purchasing a NAV3 device as well as a NAV2 device so you'll just have to set your preferences and afterwards look which device fits best.

Regards
Lars.
