I wanted to edit some road speeds to slow them down for traffic (iq2 isn't detailed in my area yet).

Is there a way to see the existing max speed on a road (so I know what I'm editing)? I know you can drive it and see the max speed in the statusbar, but is there a way to see it for other areas (eg browsing a map)?

the tomtom does not know whether you drive along the street or you run a demo route along that street. It will display the current speed.. even your correction.

I've noticed that when you edit the speed limit, if there's a set speed in the unit already the edit screen will default to it. In other words, when you 'change speed limit' and you select the road. The current speed limit is the default on the input screen.

Weird - whenever I try to edit small streets in my neighborhood, they show up as 60 mph prior to editing. But if I try to edit them later, the previous edited speed shows up.

Makes me think tomtom has all local streets set to 60mph? I wonder how tomtom avoids local neighborhoods when it thinks they can be driven so fast.

(I'm in Boston)

I tried out demo mode with "show speed limit" turned on (815 map), and I found that tomtom must keep two sets of speeds: IQroutes speed, and speed limits.

The demo speeds up and slows down where I would as a real driver (congestion, sharp turns, etc), and usually doesn't display a speed limit. Tomtom must be using IQroutes because these demo speeds are far more intelligent than just speed limits.

Similarly, in rare cases (usually highways), both a speed limit and driven speed is shown. The demo picks the lower of the two speeds, meaning it still must still take IQ into account. Whenever I set a speed, it treats it like a speed limit, and will slow down beyond what I type if IQ tells it to.

Again, most roads don't have speed limits, which explains why so many "prior speeds" are 60mph when I attempt to set them.

Unfortunately, it seems you can't force a time of day into the demo mode (it uses present time), so I can't see if the speeds slow further during rush hour. I'll run another demo mode in the morning during rush, to see if IQ2 slows roads down even more.

Edit to my last post - tomtom doesn't pick the slower of mapshare or speed limit. When you correct a speed in mapshare, it permanently disables all IQroutes data for the corrected segment.

So beware when you correct speeds.
