I've been experiencing some intermittent power issues when using the dock, which is connected to my bike's battery. The problem is getting worse - previously it was a case of taking the device off the dock and then reattaching it. Now I'm getting no power at all (unit doesn't power on with ignition or detect power), despite a reading of around 5.6 volts on the corresponding pins on the mount. In can see that on the back of the device one of the two connectors appears corroded or worn. I've tried cleaning it up with contact cleaner, but that hasn't worked. The mount pins are clean.

Before I try anything else, I thought it best to seek advice - is this a solid copper contact that I can clean with an abrasive, or is there a better solution?

I didn't have a wire brush fine enough, but used some 1200 grit sandpaper over the blade of a small flat screw driver and it appears to have worked.

ive had issues with the mount pins themselves - they are hardwired into the circuit board in the in mount and the left pin (as you look at it) in several mounts over the last 2 years starts to lose its springiness and therefore the mount becomes useless - ive asked TOMTOM if they are going ot up date it but i received nothing in reply other than did i want 10 euros off a new mount.

Can i please ask a similar question about my 420. When i attach it to the mount when the bike is on, it does start up, but should the battery icon have a bolt through it like it does when you connect it via a usb cable at the mains? Its been ages since ive used it and cant remember whether the tomtom should have a bolt/battery icon to show its charging, or just show a battery icon as it does now (meaning I’ve got a problem and it wont charge) or whether that is normal. Many thanks

The battery icon when charged is black; if it is white, the battery is not charged.

On my Rider 500 - when the battery is fully charged, it is white. When it is charging, it has the lightning bolt symbol showing.

further advice from a colleague - if you apply some soilder to freshly brushed contacts they will work again - opening the back of the mount will enable you to correct the spring pin as well - hope this helps

Oxidation will eventually be created on the surface of the solder, making another unreliable connection that will have to be dealt with periodically. There's no bulletproof solution apart from re-plating, which isn't an option in this kind of situation.
