Hi, I intend buying a new unit which must have bluetooth for handsfree mobile use and the facility to be able to set the distance from the speed camera site that the alert sounds. European mapping and speaking street names is also necessary. The speed camera distance setting is important as I understand the later models do not have this facility and I consider it a necessity and was available before on my older units.
I would very much appreciate all comments and advise.
Thankyou

The last unit that I can recall (and others may think of additional ones) that would accomplish all of those things would be GO750 model which dates back to 2009 (or a somewhat higher priced 950 that includes North American maps). I do not believe that ANY of the Nav3 (more recent) units are capable of allowing distance to Speed Cam to be set by the user.

Andy - can you think of any other models? I would suspect a 750 is going to have to be picked up as a 'used' or 'refurb' model in any case.

Hi.
Interesting, my Son-In-Law bought a XL last year new and that allows distance to POI to be set. That same unit with Bluetooth would be fine. So am a bit confused !!

Unless I misunderstand the question, my GO LIVE 1535 does all of these things, and I assume that some of the other models will do so also - depending upon their feature lists.

The 1535 has a Bluetooth connection to my cell phone and will receive a phone call almost hands-free. I tap the screen once to accept or decline the incoming call, and once at the end to disconnect. If the incoming call is in the phone book of my cell phone, the caller is identified on the screen of the 1535.

I believe that it will place outgoing calls with a single tap on the screen, followed by voice commands to select the number to be called, as the manual says that it can do this. However, I cannot swear to this as fact, as I refuse to place an outgoing call while driving, and have never used this feature.

I am able to set the alert distance for speed cameras and for red-light cameras to different values of my own choosing. I can confirm that the red-light camera alerts function as intended, but I am not aware of any speed cameras in my area, so I do not know from personal experience that the speed camera alerts work as intended. (Everything I have seen indicates that they will, but I cannot state that as a fact without personal knowledge.)

With best wishes,

As far as I know ALL models (including NAV3) allowed you to set a warning distance (actually "time") before a speed camera, up until one of the recent software updates.
(to prove it to myself, I have an un-updated Go1000 in front of me, and the setting is still on there).

They've messed it up with the latest round of Navcore updates for both NAV2 and NAV3 models.... So "et"/Tom, I'd be interested to see if you really do STILL have the options you think you have....

But Lincol... if you use a third-party speed camera database instead of TomTom;'s own, then you still can set any warning distance you like (and usually they are more accurate anyway...).

So any Bluetooth-capable model with TTS voices and Europe mapping would do.

Have a look at the model comparison chart...

I had forgotten about that issue, although I am confident that TomTom will fix that bug soon - if only for marketing reasons. Personally, I have dodged that particular bullet in two ways.

First, I have not installed any of the most recent updates on my 1535 (although I am planning to do so tonight if I don't get assigned to higher priority tasks by The Supreme Commander).

Second, I normally use the third-party camera files from the US site "POI Factory", rather than the files supplied by TomTom. In the past I have not encountered any camera locations in the TomTom files that are not in the POI Factory files, but I have found some in the POI Factory files that were not in the TomTom files.

With best wishes,

There are a lot of XL models, and none of them are the new Nav3 unit. Good for your son-in-law, though!

I don't think there's been a new XL released in the UK since 2010, but that said, none of them support BT handsfree operation. To get BT, you'd need a GO model or one of the new Nav3 units.

I hadn't noted that UK location on the original post, but seeing that, it rather solves the issue of not being able to set a distance to a cam warning (we don't know if TomTom considers that a bug now or 'normal' operation, or if it will ever be 'fixed'). Since it is said that the UK cam POI data from TomTom is so poor, a 3rd party set (http://www.pocketgpsworld.com seems to be the most recommended) gets around the problem because custom POI sets such at this one don't have the issue of the distance warning that the 'built-in' set does. That opens up quite a number of Nav3 units since several do incorporate BT functionality.
