can anyone help, my satnav will not recognise full UK postcodes, only the first two letters and numbers
any help will be appreciated

Go here:
http://www.tomtom.com/updates/zipcodes/Map_850/zip.zip

and get the 850 version of postal codes for the UK. Unzip them into the zip folder on your unit.

The "zip" and "zip" get a little confusing.

The downloaded file is called zip.zip.

The folder named "zip" needs to be extracted from the downloaded file "zip.zip".

The resulting folder called "zip" needs to be placed in the root directory of the unit, correct? Not sure that last step was clear.
