Hallo all,

I just purchased a 720 a day a go. I'm hoping it will arrive at my place this week so i can start playing:)
I was reading this forum (720) for a quite a bit today, a lot of good stuff.
My question is what is tomtom home? and do i have to upgrade maps and appl?
There are members posting different versions for maps and application.
I can understand the maps update (where can i upgrade them). Is the application upgrade same as firmware upgrade?
How should i started, just follow the manual or there is a "forum version" on how to properly start with yours new unit?
thx a lot

Welcome.

First of all, make a complete backup of your unit using Explorer and ensure Windows is set to show hidden files and extensions for known file types. Save this to a folder on your hard drive. It is your 'safety net' ;)

Home is the software you install on the computer that interfaces between the unit and TomTom's web site. You NEED this software as it is the only way to properly add and install maps and other items. When you first run the install cd, it'll install an older (1.5) version of Home and you should find it offering a newer version to download. Accept that and install (2.382, I think).

'Firmware' and 'application' are being used interchangeably and mean the operating system for the unit. You can find out what firmware version is installed by tapping the satellite bars once, the next screen shows the currently installed version. Tap that screen and the next one shows the map version and build installed on the unit.

The current firmware version for the 720's is 7.481 (There was a version 8x available for a couple of days but it got pulled ... way too many problems with it). However, if the version you have installed on your unit is 7.221, I suggest you keep that and do NOT accept an upgrade to 7.481. Issues with that one, too.

As to the map. The current latest release for the 720 is 7.20 (I don't know where you are but for North America, the map is NA 7.20. Do NOT accept US & Canada 7.20. It's inferior).

Since you've had the unit 1 day, you are entitled to have this 7.20 map using Home's software Latest Map Guarantee. If you go to that menu option and it says you have the latest when you indeed have less than 7.20 installed, it's an example of the flakiness of Home's software (you'll learn :( ). You can try to get the 720 map by starting Home and going to the icon Add Maps/Voices. Drill down and see if the NA 7.20 map is offered by that approach. If you are still unsuccessful, I'm afraid you'll have to call TomTom Support. you won't be the first to have to do it this way ...

Stupid me .... noticed in your title it says you're from NC. Ignore my comment about not knowing where you are.

I got my 720 today and im playing with TTHOME now.
I started with a backup but i found a error on the end of the backup. Does it matter if im using Mozilla not explorer? I unhidden all files.
"An error occurred while reading this file: "O:\Settings.dat" An error occured while writing to this file: " D:\Docs&Sett......\Beckup\Go\Beckup01\internalmemory\settings.dat"

Any ideas guys?

I checked maps ver is: 710.1584 and application for GO, XL, ONE and RIDER is : 7.221.

Thx guys

Welcome NC...

What the person meant was to use your computer explorer (not IE or ForeFox or TT Home) t make a backup.

When you plug in the device (and say connecto to the computer), the computer will recignize the device as a disk drive. With all files shown (Tools / Folder Options / View Tab / Make sure Show hidden files and folders is checked (I always show file extensions too)

Do a bulk copy of the entire device before going forward, then if something bad happens, you've got a perfect backup of the entire device...

Don't mess with this backup unless you really need it. Once you get connected to Home do a backup there too. Hard drive space is cheap, and you can never be too safe. I'd hate to loose everything that I've got on my Tom Tom devices.
