TomTom Model(s)
Start42 (Map version 995/8537) & One 3rd Edition
Hello,
Apologies if this is covered already I must admit I didn't check every single post. I've just bought a Start 42.The map version is 995- August 2017- and covers Europe 48 countries. I set up My Drive Connect to get latest v1020 map. It tells me that I do not have enough storage and that I have two options (1) Create free space by removing unwanted items from device such as some Voices or (2) Install SD card. I want to avoid the second option for the moment, I am not sure about getting around the compatibility/transfer problems. Unfortunately My Drive does not show how to remove unwanted items. It was a bit clearer on TomTom Home for my older device. Can anyone help regarding the Start42 or know for sure what card I can get which will work? I don't mind the price so long as it works smoothly. Hope this query isn't too long.
Thanks

I forgot to mention that although the Tom tom support says that if you click on the "free up storage space" option it will open a Clean Up Wizard tool, this does not happen, nothing changes.

I **strongly** suggest you do indeed go for option 2. A 16 gb SanDisk card doesn't cost that much and will handle map expansion and future maps quite well.

I agree with dhn 100%.
With the SD card installed the device will ask to format it; OK it.
Once done, download the 1020 map.
There is nothing to be transferred.

DNH & Arno, Thanks for your help. I will go along with your advice. The cost doesn't bother me, good to know that San Disk is compatible and that new map will automatically install on the new card. Should I at any point delete the original map from device's internal storage?
Thanks again.

SanDisk is a good choice but I use the cheapest on sale and have no problems since 2013.
The updater software will replace an identical map during an update and will look for where it finds the space for it. Since 995 the maps have grown significantly and chances are that there is not enough space for the 1020 on your internal anyway.

Hello again,
Thanks to help from DNH & Arno all is well with my new Start 42. I installed a SanDisk 16GB card and
installed the v1020 map.One thing puzzles me. Free space on this card is now 15.87GB. Does that mean that most of the new map (5806MB) is on the internal memory? I thought that as there wasn't enough memory left in the device that all of new map would go on the Sandisk. Would it be very unclever to temporarily remove the card to see what's on the internal memory? Thanks in advance for any opinions.

What it means is that the entire map is now (again) in internal memory. A map set is never split between internal and external memory.

It won't hurt a thing if you remove the card.
What isn't readily apparent is that files used during updates take slightly more space then the final product will take when complete. You must have been right on the hairy edge. Hang on to that card -- odds are high that the map will wind up there next time.

Canderson, I appreciate your input, it all makes good sense. I won't be using this card for anything other than this TomTom. If I need one for other use they are cheap enough. Unrelated comment: I gather that you're not a WD40 fan. I do a bit if cycling and read that many hate it. "It is a penetrant/detergent, not a lubricant, keep away from moving parts" seems to be a widely held view. I tend to agree.
Thanks
