Rider 550
Apologies for the long post but I think all the background info is important.

I have a TomTom Rider 550 which I have been using since around April 2022

When I set everything up I created a TomTom account and downloaded and installed the “TomTom MyDrive Connect” program onto my Windows10 PC. I have been using the “Route Planner” accessed from this program.

I also mistakenly downloaded and installed the “TomTom Home” program to my PC (Which is not supposed to work with a Rider 550 but did!).

I have installed MyDrive on my Android phone but have not used it.

I started to have problems with TomTom MyDrive Connect which I could not resolve so started using TomTom Home to access the Route Planner, but after a recent update this has stopped working. So I was back to trying to resolve the problem with TomTom MyDrive Connect.

When I load TomTom MyDrive Connect on my PC it displays a panel saying there is a required update. When I click on the “Update MyDrive Connect” button there is a moment of activity (the cursor shows something is running) but nothing else seems to happen and the panel disappears. Repeating this process any number of times just has the same result.

I have uninstalled the TomTom Home program in case this was causing the problem but this has had no effect.

My next step will be to uninstall and then reinstall TomTom MyDrive Connect – but – I do not want to loose all my stored routes. There are over 20 of them and they took a very long time to set up!

I have done a lot of research on the internet and will follow the instructions I have read to delete all the remaining TomTom folders that the uninstall program leaves behind before doing the reinstall.

Another thing which seems odd to me: When I plug my TomTom into my PC using the TomTom USB cable, the PC makes the sound indicating that it has detected something being connected, but nothing shows in Windows Explorer (I would expect the TomTom unit to show as a storage device like my Android mobile phone does) and nothing shows in Device manager (I would expect to see a device connected to one of the USB hubs).

So my questions are:

1) Any ideas as to why things have stopped working?

2) Are the files containing my routes held somewhere on my PC or are they in my TomTom account and stored on a server somewhere? (I can access them using the app on my phone which would tend to indicate they are not on my PC?)

3) If I uninstall TomTom MyDrive Connect is there a danger that this might delete my routes?

4) Can I log on to my TomTom account from my PC (nothing to do with my TomTom device or the MyDrive connect program) and see what files (routes) are there?

5) Any ideas why the TomTom unit is not showing as a connected device on my PC?

Any and all help gratefully appreciated.

The current monsoon may end soon and I am eager to get out on the bike!!

George.

Mydrive connect is not useful for updating your rider 550 so no need to install the update only via wi-fi.

Your routes are stored on Tomtom servers via your Mydrive application installed on your phone or on the Mydrive web page so if you uninstall Mydrive connect on your computer you will not lose your routes.

It didn't "work" with your 550. It never communicated with it. All that worked was the planner link. Only MyDrive Connect would communicate with your 550. You don't need either Home or MyDrive Connect to access the planner. It can be accessed directly by putting https://plan.tomtom.com/en directly into your favorite web browser.

I have installed MyDrive on my Android phone but have not used it.

I should ask - how are you getting traffic data to your 550?

The MyDrive phone app isn't a requirement for doing anything on your 550 either, but it does supply a couple of convenient approach to services should you find yourself in need of them. We find it to be a battery hog.

Your 550 has the ability to connect to a home WiFi network for firmware and map updates. It will also pick up (sync) any routes, favorites, etc. that you create at https://plan.tomtom.com/en. Other than for adding or deleting voices, there's really no longer any value in using MyDrive Connect on a PC for much of anything starting with these TomTom devices with WiFi built in.

If you log into the site https://plan.tomtom.com/en with the same email and password you are using for your 550, you should see all of your routes there. They're not stored on your PC. You can delete Home and MyDrive Connect and your routes will be out in the TomTom cloud and on your device, just as they have always been.

No, your 550 does NOT appear in Explorer because it isn't connected as a storage device. The last TomTom devices to do so were a couple of generations back.

If you will use Device Manager, you'll discover that your 550 is connecting as a little mini-server, and can be found under "Network adapters" in the Device Manager list provided you haven't uninstalled the driver that MyDrive Connect provided to make this possible.

Just for grins, with your 550 connected to your PC, place this line in your favorite browser:
What you'll see is some current information obtained directly from your 550 at that IP address about its configuration.
