TomTom Model(s)
go 500
New to the forum so bear with me..Just bought the Go 500 ..connected to my win 7 laptop installed tom tom s/ware and updated maps no problem( took aprox 1hr 30 mins).all fine until I open device manager and the tom tom is listed under Network devices..Hence not showing in Windows explorer.. have spent the last 6 hrs searching for a soloution..googled here and googled there...no joy..
I am computer literate and know my way around pc`s..but this is a problem that seems to be familiar with a lot of ToM Tom users...where is Tom tom suport....they list a few possible soloutions but its obviously a usb driver problem that should have be rectified...any soloutions out there welcome....il try anything....
(Wouldn`t mind I origianally purchased a Garmin( which worked a treat until the screen started shaking) so exchanged for the tom tom..DuH!!!!

That's it. The NAV4 generation of TomToms are displayed as network adapters.
With the USB connected and the device on you can go to http://169.254.255.1/mpnd/status but thay may not tell you much.

What were you hoping to see or achieve by going under the hood (bonnet for you)?

Tomtom used to emulate itself as a thumb drive over USB to windows, but Tomtom was sued by Microsoft for using the patented Fat32 filesystem without paying a royalty.

Tomtom settled the case by agreeing to stop using Fat32, so it was forced to change how it emulates. Now it emulates as a webserver sitting behind a network card, and all communication from the MyDrive software is via SSL website upload/download. Just as effective, but you need to use the Tomtom MyDrive software to interact with it and can no longer use windows explorer.

Thanks to you both for the info.Pity always nice to peek under the "hood" ;) .if thats the case is there facilities to add acustom voice, poi etc. Unfortunately cant access the Link you provided..Seems a realy good forum. ..thanks again for replies..

Custom voices can be loaded by following the steps below:
www.tomtom.com/3170

Custom POI is not yet supported on the GO500, but Tomtom is holding a closed beta test of this feature, so it should be coming soon.

Downloaded and installed the free voice ok..
used the go 500 for first time today and well pleased.Clear precise directions.tried to fool it travelling up a few dirt tracks and off road..it responded within seconds..
