I love making useful stuff that costs nothing (or very little) but its still as functional as an expensive commercial option, hence the custom mount you see below:
Essentially I just scavenged some miscellaneous metal brackets, a couple screws and a magnet from a dead hard drive. yup that's right, it's a magnetic attachment! I just used the plastic disc that came with the tomtom, the one which has a sticky side that you can stick to your dash, so I could attach the gps via the suction cup. Since the magnet is so strong, there is no problem with the thing falling off. It takes a good yank to remove it. Also, it involved no drilling holes or other permanent things. The whole thing is completely removable.
As an added bonus, I like the position of the gps here better, since I don't like it blocking my windshield.
