This page is copied from TomTom's web site in case it is moved or is taken down in the future ( https://www.tomtom.com/en_us/navigation/obsolete-products/#car ), though it's not 100% accurate. Our old 740 Live TM continues to get maps, though the Live part disappeared a while back when 2G ended in the US.

The simple fact is that many of the older units were limited to 2GB of memory. Used to be you could fit the entire North_America map into that space. Now it takes around 4X that amount of space or more due to added map detail. To deal with ever increasing map size, TomTom had at one time broken maps up into pieces and offered them that way, but apparently no longer. As a result, they've ceased supporting the small memory model devices.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Every day, at TomTom, we work very hard to bring you the best navigation experience ever. A big part of this work is to continuously improve the quality of the maps, services and software that your sat nav runs on.

It has become clear that some of our older generation navigation devices do not have sufficient resources to run the newest maps and software available.

How it will affect your device
For affected devices (see the full list of affected devices at the end of the page),

  • You will not be able to renew maps or services.
  • If you have an active subscription to map updates or TomTom services, you will continue receiving those until the subscription runs out.
  • You will not receive new software updates.
  • Your device will continue to function as it does now, but your map will become out-of-date and as such navigation will be less accurate.

Why are your maps and live services updates and support stopping for some customers? We’ve been able to continuously improve our maps and software for the past 12 years for TomTom devices. However, over time and due to the available resources on some older devices they are no longer capable of running the latest software and maps. As an illustration, in 2010 a map for Europe was 1.6GB, and today it is 6.5GB.
