TomTom Model(s)
910
I Bought the World map for £39 and want to download the whole USA but after initial downloading came back an hour later and it said failed.
So from the menu I am just trying the Eastern USA bit to see if that downloads. I have installed and formatted a 32 GB micro drive memory
so will see how it works/
Anyone else having problems downloading maps?
I have managed to download the N East USA but only onto the internal memory but it refuses to download onto the external formatted 32 GB micro HC memory so is there a particular memory type I have to use

Guess we'd better start from scratch.

AFAIK, the only TomTom ever called a "910" (shown as the model you own) hearkens back to 2006. Have you since purchased a newer TomTom, or are we actually talking about an actual 17 year old device? It also had no SD or uSD slot, further making me suspect we're talking about something other than a 910.

Assuming you own a different model, please advise what it is. We'll have a better idea of what message should appear when you insert a properly formatted uSD card.

As for formatting a 32GB card, it's important that it be formatted in FAT32, and the default on some systems is NTFS or something else. TomTom doesn't recognize other formats. We recommend Class 10 or better cards, though that seems to be what most of them are these days anyway.

In one of your messages you say you have a GO Essential I suppose the map you bought is for this GPS?
After inserting the micro-SD into the GPS did it ask you to format it if yes you must select map.

Sorry for the confusion but Im talking about my Tomtom Go essentials that I need the map of USA to go there later this year.
1) So far with little internal memory space I have managed to download parts of the USA ie NEast and also Canada sections but they will only install on the internal memory which leaves little room left for anything else.
I have tried a standard 32GB micro drive which the essentials formatted itself but this still wont allow maps to be intalled so looks like something is not right. I might try formatting the memory with FAT 32 format which I think is correct for Tomtom using my laptop instead and see if that makes a difference.
2) If I manage to get the external memory going I can put maps on it so if I delete the USA map from internal memory can I then re install the USA map on the external memory card or does tomtom server see I already have the map downloaded and so I have to buy the map again?

It is normal that as long as there is space on the internal memory, the maps are installed on the internal memory.

When I try to install the whole of the usa it comes back with "something went wrong"
also I have tried re formatting the memory chips to use again but tomtom does something to them and my windows 7 wont touch them now so cant re format by windows or tomtom to start again

Are you updating via WiFi?

If you use Wi-Fi, the GPS should not be connected to the computer but rather to a smartphone charger.

If still the same I think you need to try again with a new micro-SD of maximum 32 GB class 10 and insert it into the GPS. the GPS will ask you to format it.

Might try that but it will probably be a wast of time since tomtom effectively destroys memory chips as it locks them to prevent re formatting and re use as far as I can see even if the map is unuseable. I have had flags asking whether I want the map on the internal of sd drive and when I say sd drive it tries to copy it but it is not accessable
1) Anyone else had this problem Ie can only install maps on the internal drive or
2) what do other users use ie make, model and capacity of their micro drive as no one has answered this question yet

I replied to you
As a brand I prefer a reliable SD like Sandisk

Now if your GPS is new, ask Tomtom support for help.

By the way, what maps have you installed on GO Essential which has 16 GB of internal memory?

Say what?
If you allow a TomTom to format a uSD card its way (I believe they're still using ext2), there's absolutely no reason the card can't be subsequently formatted by your PC to whatever else (FAT32, NTFS, etc) you like. I swap uSD cards around between TomTom units and other devices all the time.
