European map sd card

I bought the above card from 2008/9 not sure which but I'm guessing it will be out of date now, is this something I can update or is it as good as useless now ?

Yes, there will have been many changes since 08/09. What may be important, though, is how many changes may have occurred where you regularly drive, or plan to drive.
If you find the map too out of date for your driving areas, then you would need to purchase a new map at TomTom to get fully up to date.
Can you advise which model of XL you have? Do you have the first two digits of the serial number on the bottom?
