Which Generation TomTom Do I Own?

Over the years since TomTom introduced their first hardware navigation solution in 2005, these devices have undergone several major ‘platform’ changes. To each of these generations, TomTom has assigned an internal name. Nav1 was their earliest PDA software.

The earliest hardware devices we call Nav2, built between 2005 and 2010. Management of these devices was performed using TomTom’s PC and Apple app called TomTom HOME.

This was followed by the Nav3 devices, built between 2011 and 2013.

Starting 2013, the Nav4 series began production, followed by what we call here Nav4 – WiFi for the addition of WiFi features that not only provided a different means for connection, but different update procedures as well.

Within each of these, specialty versions have been created. The ‘Camper’, ‘Truck’ (aka ‘Expert’, ‘Pro’ and ‘Professional’) and Rider (motorcycle oriented) sub-models all have their own unique features.

It is important that when seeking help for a specific device, you are aware of and can communicate the model that you own. Each of the TomTom models produced starts with a unique two-character prefix in its serial number. From those first two characters, you can know which of the generations you own (Nav2, Nav3, Nav4 or Nav4 – WiFi) and in addition, will help your moderators and fellow members to assist you with information specific to your device.

In the unlikely event that you do not find your prefix here, please let us know in our “Feedback & Suggestions” section so that we can investigate this.

If you are not sure of your model, please use one of the following video tutorials to identify your serial number, and having done so, you will be able to find your prefix in the lists provided in these forum areas:
