Tele Atlas database still faulty

I just updated my TomTom with the latest maps and still see that Tele Atlas still is not on the ball as to its definition of Highways/Freeways compared to Navteq. If I set up a route and choose "Avoid Freeways" it still takes me down freeways. I have tried the same thing with Garmin, Magellen and Motonav and they all avoid freeways. I can't fault TomTom since it is clearly a database issue as to what road or road segment is a freeway or not.

This is very annoying and is keeping me from givng TomToms to some of my family members who are beginner drivers and I want to avoid them meandering onto a highway or freeway. As to me there are many times during rush hours here in New York City and vicinity where I want to avoid freeways because of their congestion.

GPS units are to be a driving aid and one should not have to fight with them to get a route that one is comfortable with.

I also mentioned in the past that an acceptable solution would be to have the Limited Speed option behave as expected i.e. if I enter 40mph, exclude all roads where the speed limit exceeds 40mph - this would effectively exclude the freeway system here in NY since they typically have a 50/55mph limit.

Did you ever report this issue? If no-one tells them about it then don't hold your breath waiting for it to change.
I've never wanted to avoid freeways so I have no experience of this issue, but why can't you blame TomTom? They bought Tele Atlas four years ago. When will you hold them responsible for the accuracy of their own maps?

Sure did! I even stated a bunch of roadways that I had issues with!

Did you ever report this issue?

But those are all just posts in forums, all of which are totally independent of TomTom themselves.
TT do keep an eye on the user forums, but won't pick up this sort of thing from them. You need to contact them direct.
(Sorry if I've got the wrong end of the stick and you have done already...)

Dear xxx,

Thank you for updating your incident. We regret the inconvenience cause due to the delay in responding.

I understand in continuation with the previous escalation, you would like us to cover the New York city and majorly "Van Wyck Expressway", "Cross Bronx Expressway", "Belt Parkway", "Southern State Parkway", "Northern State Parkway", "Long Island Expressway", "Cross Island" parts.

Please spend some time covering the New York City and Boros as well. Off the top of my head I can suggest the infamous "Van Wyck Expressway", "Cross Bronx Expressway", "Belt Parkway", "Southern State Parkway", "Northern State Parkway", "Long Island Expressway", "Cross Island". These are a handful, there are many more. Please we are talking about New York City with a major rush hour issue and need a GPS that is an extension of how we drive and think. It should be our friend not something that we have to fight and kludge around using waypoints and itinerary planning.

I have no problems with my Magellan 4250 or with my Garmin Nuvi 350. When the "Avoid Highway" or "Use least freeway" are turned on they will not use these roads and if you are on these roads they will route you off at the very next exit.

Dear xxx,

Thank you for updating your incident.

I understand you would like to inform that Hwy 33 does not get excluded despite preparing the routes on our latest map or even after changing the speed limit.

I truly regret to learn about the inconvenience caused.

I have already forwarded your map feedback to our product development for further review and we will do our best to cover these regions completely in the next app version that would be released shortly. Our product development team might contact you via e-mail if they require any detailed information about the streets you have specified. Let me quickly walk you through the way map feedbacks are handled:

1. TomTom Map Content Specialists receive a user-submitted change once we escalate it to them.

2. Map Content Specialists research each submission using data from several databases.

3. An automatic patch is created in the system for all verified changes.

4. Whenever a new application or the map version is released these changes are included.

I have the same problem with my just recently purchased 340TM Live. This too will choose Highway 33 whether I choose "Avoid Freeways" or I choose "Limited Speed" (40mph, 30mph) considering that the speed limit is 50 it should be excluded as well. Why does both not exclude the route?

I believe one can see it by preparing a route from 400 Eggert Rd, Buffalo NY to Buffalo Niagra International Airport.

To recap my unit is
TomTom 340TM Live SN#B42150K01141 Map v840.2562 GPS v1.20 Boot 5.5138 Device AKTSL BSAQE App 9.054.531676.2 OS 515773

P.S. I also tried it on my TomTom app v1.4.1 on my iTouch App version 8.300 (541063) Map: 'North_America' v850.2861 with the same results.

I have a bigger problem. My daughter just moved up to Buffalo and I am working to set her up and am taking her on various test runs to school. She is a beginner driver and all that I want to start with is to go on local roads. There is a road here, Highway 33 that both my TomToms (130S and 340TM Live) included in some of the trips that we took. All this while I chose ?Avoid Freeways? this is an aggressive road with a speed limit of 50, where you access the road via high speed merges. My Magellan 4250 cleanly avoided Highway 33 when I chose ?Least Use of Freeways?. What upset me even more is that if I chose to limit speed to 40, it still includes 33 even if I set the limit down to 30mph it still includes Highway 33. How in g-ds name do I set up my GPS to exclude this damn road! I don?t want my daughter to be guided there under ANY circumstance. As I mentioned earlier I also had this issue in Long Island NY and now here in Buffalo NY? Since I don?t know Buffalo I don?t know how many other routes fall into this category.

One of the reasons why I bought TomToms is also because I figured I can tweak route choices by ?correcting? trouble roads in New York City by setting their speed to say 10mph and therefore I figured the GPS will effectively exclude those roads. This does not seem to work since no matter how I set the speed to it doesn?t seem to affect its selection.

I need to resolve this quickly since I will soon leave her alone and want to make sure that she under no circumstance will be guided by a GPS into a ?Freeway? or whatever you call a road that has speeds of 50 and above and that is entered via merging via ramps.

I would leave my daughter with my Magellan but it has a habit of ?forgetting how to speak? i.e. it would say ?turn left on? followed by a pause and I then have to ?reboot? the unit. I may need to go the Garmin route. I gave my Nuvi 350 to my elder daughter when I got the 4250 and had no issues but found it lacking of features. I will call my daughter and see if some of these test routes on the Garmin does the necessary exclusions.

I am also annoyed that my 340TM Live has a tendency to spontaneously shut off or reboot!

Could someone try this on a TomTom One 130 S (I don't know if it is a 130 or a 130 3rd edition

Prepare route

Depart from POI In City "Lawrence NY" Search "Bay Harbor Mall"
Destination POI in City "Garden City NY" Search "Roosevelt Field Mall"

Choose Avoid Freeway and see if route contains (via browse as text)
"Southern State Parkway"

This does not happen on my Magellen 1450 or my TomTom XL340TM Live
