FYI.

Reports are surfacing that the iPhone app is illegal to use in Australia.

The cell phone driving ban extends to any cell phone app, including all smartphone navigation (such as those commonly used by the iPhone and Nokia).

There appears to be a specific exemption for non-phone GPSs like standalone Tomtoms, but that doesn't apply to the iPhone app.

See here.

Well, it seems unclear what is and what isn't allowed.

In Ontario, supposedly in October, similar legislation will come into being. The bottom line is that hand-held devices will be illegal but stuff like gps units tethered to windshield or dash will be ok as will pnd's, as long as they are tethered, not held in the hand.
