TomTom Model(s)
TomTom Go Comfort 5"
I just upgraded from a XXL 540M to the new Go Comfort 5".
Why TomTom got rid of XXL format I do not know.
Having a hard time getting to know and maneuver the Go Comfort.
I am from the Generation where new is not always better.

Welcome to TomTomForums.
I am from the Generation where new is not always better.
We all are, we all are.
After nearly 4years I am still complaining having to read whats in the screen versus Information at a glance of the old one.

I you have any specific questions, fire at will.

This question is for my Go Comfort 5"
Why does the pointer arrow about the + - screen size not point to North. It shows the right direction by N NE ect. but the arrow seems to be always pointing to were South is ???

The Comfort 5" is a new model for me but it should be the same as the others.

When planning a route and it displays on the screen the arrow will always point to the north, just like a paper map.
The guidance view for driving can be 2D (in direction of travel) or 3D.
The arrow depicting your car's position will always point up but the arrow should point to true north with the letters below indicating the current tilt of the underlaying map.
This becomes very apparent when you switch to 2D mode. If you reach a turn, you can see the route rotate under the route pipe until it becomes nearly vertical again.

You can test that at home by running a Demo of a short route.
Program a destination. Home screen (right top arrow).
Menu > Current route > Play Route Preview.
To get out of Demo mode tap the X, bottom of route bar and then the X with an arrowhead towards the top left.

I took a ride and looked at it again. I think I understand now. Question why does the map roll from South to North.
On My old XXL540M it rolled from North to South. When I am driving North the Maps comes up from the bottom of the GPS. Why don't they come from the North like my old model. Thank you for having patience with my thick head.

That is not a compass. The arrow points to the direction of travel.

I am sorry, David, but I maintain that that the arrow is a compass with the tip always pointing due north.

As the letter S says, I am driving in the southerly direction while the tip of the arrow points to true north.

Rotating that very screen print so that the tip of the arrow points to due north, along the black line.

The arrow of the route pipe and the letter S show that I was driving south.

Showing me where north is at all times is my definition of a compass.
Should that be wrong, please show me the error of my thoughts.[/quote]

I think I got it Now. When the GPS is in no route mode it acts how it wants to act. When I put in a destination it acts
the way I am use to a GPS acting. Ah, except for the arrow above the + - screen size. It points to where my destination is relative to my position. The Arrow is not Compass on the Go Comfort Model....Thank you TomTom
for this ingenious and stupid flaw. Looks Like I am going to have to live with or sell it. I just thought all GPS would have a Compass. Should have done my Home Work better.

The arrow above the +/- s in the first print is a compass always pointing North as you can see in the print above, as is and as rotated for the arrow to actually pointing North.

This screen shows the opening state of the GPS, arrow North by NorthWest.

Again, the same route (to Work) as in the original print [I am driving in 3D but the total route is always displayed in 2D].

Note that the destination is West by SouthWest from current location but that the arrow has not changed from the North by NorthWest position.

I have now changed the Guidance view from 3D to 2D (in direction of travel) an ran the route in demo mode again and there is no change in the behaviour of th arrow.

Try making a very short route, run it in demo mode ans observe the arrow as it points its tip to the compass direction of the turn.

Sold my TomTom bought a 5.5 Garmin Smart-Drive...Thank you everybody for all the help. Got $125.00 on e-bay
