I seem to be offered a new speed camera update almost daily and my device indicates that it has 3.25 gb of internal space available. Would I be correct in assuming that if I inserted and formatted a blank micro SD card into the vacant port that it would expand this capacity and put off the time when it filled up?

Tomtom software only puts files for speed camera updates on internal storage. Larger maps can go on storage cards.

The good news is that each speed camera update overwrites the previous information, so while the file may grow a little as more cameras are being reported, it's not going to be a big cumulative add to your device.
