910 USB connection without home dock

Is there a way to connect my 910 to the USB port on my laptop without using the home dock? I have been doing everything I can to reduce size and weight for travel. I bought an Asus Eee PC (2 pounds) and hate to have to take the home dock for the 910 to connect it to the Eee. I will need to connect as I plan to use the 910 as a backup drive for images, etc.

That's what I was afraid of. I was not able to find any clever cables. Poor design decision, that. Oh well, there are plenty of things to like about the 910.

A USB cable is a USB cable. You just can't stand it up. I've always left my dock at home.

You must not have a 910. On my 910 there is no USB connector on the body of the unit. The USB cable attaches internally to the dock.

My 920 is very happy with a USB to mini B cable (that originally came with my Canon G6 camera). Data transfers and charging are all good.

Not all USB connections are alike. Look and see if (like the 920) you have a mini-B connection.

X10 series are different. They need the HOME dock.
