Perfectly good device until I plug it into the computer for the first time and, upon trying to install the very important and certainly experience improving update that isn't just gonna drain at least 5 hours of my life in figuring out the ****show it caused, the gps no longer gets past the startup screen(the one where you can put a custom picture into). Upon backing it and up and updating, TomTom Home also kept bringing up errors such as ''cannot create file'' x or y.
I copied and pasta'd all the files in the gps to a folder on my disk and formatted the gps. Trying to copy them back to it but I can't get over 7kb/s and I/O errors keep popping up.(I have a feeling the usb cable may not be working properly, though it's still strange considering I've already tried two)
Turning the gps on as it is, all it shows is a red cross on a blue background.
I swear, I'm eating my own shoe the day updating whatever company's software upon being barraged with the constant very important update reminder is a good idea.
Help is certainly appreciated, and any extra useful information will be gladly provided.

Update:
Some 3 hours or so into re-copying the files into the device it was finally back as it used to be - literally - because it's still getting stuck in startup. Had the fabulous idea of removing the files that had a recent modification date in an attempt to undo what the supposed update had done but it was to no avail.

Conclusion:
Plugged into a different computer. Update magically installed properly. Tomtom back to work.
Cheers.

Try this:
Hook up to PC. Find the folder that contains your map files (it's not the folder called 'map'). Find the file called mapsettings.cfg. Rename it to mapsettings.xxx. Reboot and report.

Thank you very much for the assistance, my friend, but, as you can see, the problem has been solved!

Understood. Hadn't refreshed the page to see that you had updated your original post. So what I left is now for future reference. About 95% of the time, with the symptom you provided, the solution given resolves the issue if it isn't otherwise possible to complete the previous update.
