Help will be gratefully appreciated as I have just paid AU$99.95 for what appears to be nothing!

Up until 3 hours ago was very happy with my XL.

Was offered a map update deal via email and decided to take up the offer. This is the first time I have updated the maps(except for the free updates offered so far) and now I have an expensive paper weight because of the problem listed below I now have NO MAPS what so ever.
Also I stupidly did not backup previous version.

Using TomTom HOME version 2.8.1.2218
Downloaded the map update successfully.
However install to internal memory cannot be achieved and the following message appears:

Cannot create this file - E:\Australia\cline.dat

The detailed description appears below:

ERROR: DesktopLib/InstallToDevice/Install/Single/DestinationFileDoesNotExist: Cannot create this file: E:\Australia\cline.dat

Welcome to TTF.

Appears the downloaded map file was corrupt. If you are using a wireless connection, try using a directly wired connection.

Anyway, try installing the map without using Home. See here for instructions:
https://www.tomtomforums.com/genera...nstall-downloaded-map-without-using-home.html

Before doing that, make an Explorer, not Home, backup of your unit's contents. Then delete the contents of map folder on your unit. But leave the folder in place.

If the manual install doesn't work, go here:
C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Downloads\complete\maps\

and rename the highlighted folder to Downloadsold. This should force another download of the map. But, use a connected, not wireless, for the download.

Thanks dhn for your swift response.

I tried the manual install but was given the following error message
ERROR: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.
Cannot create this file - E:\Australia\cline.dat

This is the 4th time i've downloaded this map update, via a hardwired connection each time, and this will be the 4th time (120 Mb a time) I recieve the same message:-

Oh and by the way ..........what the hell is cline.dat because it's past the stage of being annoying and entering a whole new world of hate!

How can I revert to my previous (supposedly outdated) maps and how do I go about getting a refund because I'm over this?

Cline.dat is an integral file in the map folder.

As I understand it, sometimes the local ISP actually caches requests on its server so that when you request a map file, you may be really getting the same corrupted map and not a fresh copy from TT's servers.

Any chance you can connect to a computer other than your own, set up Home, and try from there?

Also, you may need Aussie support for assistance:

There is a bug on the preinstalled software on your model, which causes corruption on map installs.

Run "Update my XL", deselect the map, and upgrade to app 8.083. If HOME doesn't offer that update, use winrar to extract the contents of this file onto the Tomtom, overwriting when prompted.

Then disconnect from the computer, poweroff/poweron the Tomtom, then reconnect once the Tomtom is fully started up.

Now run a chkdsk /f on the Tomtom drive, then try updating the map again.
