Just wondering, my new to me car has built in tomtom mapping, found our that when the subscription ends it's £89 a year to renew. In line with stand alone tomtom devices, I have 3 which tend to come with lifetime subscriptions, why is this so expensive and who actually gets the money. Is it Citroen or tomtom. Either way I will be forced to use Google or Wase.

For a car's integrated GPS, the manufacturer sets the price.
TomTom only provides the map to the manufacturer.

I suspected so, its a real shame as i cannot justify this amount. Tomtom is my favourite GPS, my very first one was on a palm pilot type of product with a plug in sat receiver so been with them for a long time. I am sure all that will happen is most people will just let it lapse. Thanks for your reply

You purchase the subscription from the manufacturer's website, so they are the ones who receive the money.
You have purchased the Carplay GO Expert application for €19.99 per year.

i see, so the rest goes to Citroen. £20 a year would be ok. On the Citroen App it states £89, i believe the person who had the car before paid about £60 looking at the old receipts.

Its not car play, this is built in to the car. You can user the tomtom mapping without a phone.Heres a description of it. Citroën uses a built-in TomTom sat-nav system called Citroën Connect Nav for its connected navigation services, which offers real-time traffic, speed camera alerts, and other features. This system is integrated into the vehicle's touchscreen and can be operated via voice recognition. It provides live data from TomTom, including traffic updates, fuel prices, and parking information.

You state in the title of your topic (Why is CarPlay so expensive?) that CarPlay belongs to Apple.
As I've already told you, it's Citroën that sets the prices.

Now you have two options: either buy a new TomTom GPS device, or go to the Citroën website and purchase the subscription.

Well I made a mistake calling it car play. Did not even know apple called it that, I also have an android phone. I also have more options like use wase or is it waze, might get that wrong too. Or I can use Google. Either way I don't be paying £89.

Yes through the car screen, I also have an option to use Sygic which uses tomtom mapping. I bought a lifetime licence but since then they offer a premium yearly subscription at £15 a year. I would have to do this as in order for it to work, you need the premium version.

I use Tomtom Go expert app, @£19.99 per year, which is the closest to TOMTOM built in sat nav, I have a Peugeot with built in Tomtom. But the app does not show average speed in average speed camera zones, which is a pity because it as good as the built in sat nav apart form this. I am not aware of any sat nav app which shows average speed camera and average speed and or has a route bar?
