When I connect My Tom Tom device to computer it slows down!

When I connect my Tom Tom Live 1000 to my PC, it opens up the internet browser and then brings the network speed down to a snails pace. Takes hours to download update.

I tried using it on my laptop, no issues.

Any hints as to what I should try?
 
I've seen issues similar to this when dealing with a balky USB port. Is it ONLY the network speed that seems to be impacted by the connection?
 
Whenever I connect or disconnect any NAV 3 TomTom to my PC, the Network services part of Windows goes into overdrive and hogs all the CPU resources for about 20-30 seconds.

.... but I'm used to it because the old TomTom Home program itself grabs enormous amounts of my PC's resources too!

I find Sysinternals Process Explorer (now distributed by Microsft themselves) is a great replacement for task manager, and tells you exactly what programs or processes are using CPU or memory, or reading/writing to disk.
