Wheelchair accessible pathways in Brisbane

Hi everyone,

I'm in a wheelchair, and have just got myself a motorised scooter to help with my mobility around Brisbane. I want to use my TomTom ONE GPS to help me navigate while I'm on my scooter. My question is: are there maps that track wheelchair accessible footpaths, so that I'll be able to reliably know I can use the pathways to reach my destination? Can such specialised maps be created somehow if they don't already exist?

Thanks for your help.

Sadly, no one I know has ever cracked "the code" for the creation of a map for the TomTom. All maps for these units are produced specifically for these units and distributed by TomTom.

Garmin, on the other hand, has become more and more open with its architecture over the years. There are numerous resources where maps can be found in the Garmin *.img file format that works on their current devices, both automotive mount (e.g., Nuvi models) and handheld (e.g. Oregon, Colorado).

I have no idea whether or not anyone has worked on a map specific to your needs there, but suffice it to say, it's likely going to be managed as a specialty project by folks with the time and willingness to tackle the job. Given the expense of the on-the-ground research, it wouldn't be a moneymaker for any map company.

As noted, nearly all Garmin units these days accept files in Garmin's *.img format, and it's quite possible to produce new 3rd party maps in that format. One large crowd sourced database of maps comes from OpenStreetMaps. These aren't just road maps, either. I've found park trails, lots of points of interest, and a host of other stuff embedded in these maps. I'd contact these folks ( Main Page - OpenStreetMap Wiki ) and see what groups they have working mapping in your area of Australia. You might even find yourself part of the overall mapping effort!

Here's a snapshot of what's doing down your way:

Here's some proposals already outlined. See if you can work your suggestion into the mix:

If successful, anyone will be able to grab a copy of the *.img file(s) in Australia at no cost, install them on their Garmin unit, and wheel away.

Best of luck.
