TomTom Model(s)
Go Exclusive 7
I have got a TomTom Go Exclusive. Can you get What Three Words to work on TomTom and if so so how? Googled it and it does say TomTom supports What Three Words.

Download MapCode.....very similar to W3W...but can be uaed on TT....
My job takes me into forests where the access points are covered by a postcode spanning a large area...our contrqctors drop us a pin on W3W...i then use it to find pin on Mapcode....enter the mapcode eg
4G.x15 and it puts me almost on the gate i need to access...
Give it a try...
Also a lotof addresses now when you google them have Maplink code attached..

Enjoy

TomTom have disappointed lots of us with this omission. I still use W3W and just copy the Lat & Long (shown below the 3 word location on W3W) onto my Exclusive.

As an aside -- ascot54, above, mentions MapCode. That was invented by TomTom, so they had less incentive to do something else, I guess. In any case, we rarely see any MapCode references to locations here in North America.

Didnt know Mapcode was invented by TT....every day a achool day...

It was announced, but no, What3Words is still not compatible with Tomtom GPS devices.
As far as I can see, it was announced in 2018. Maybe it will be done by 2028? No sense in rushing these things...

The long winded way to do it is to use the W3W app and when you select "Navigate', you get an option of which naviagiotn app to use - at least I do on my iPhone version. I get the option of Google, Apple, Waze and Tomtom

I have been using the same procedure without a problem for over a year using the TomTom app on my Samsung Galaxy phone. However when I tried to use it a couple of weeks ago I found that the TomTom option had disappeared from the what3words "Get Directions" window. All I have is the Google Maps and Compass icons. I am talking to what3words to try to find out what the problem is. I don't know if what3words, TomTom or I have broken something.

If someone else can still see the TomTom option in the what3words "Get Directions" window on an Android phone in the UK please post.

OK. I can answer my own question.

W3W has literally just got back to me with the following :

"....the latest update of the TomTom Android app is no longer set up to receive incoming locations sent from other apps. This change is non-what3words specific - it will affect any apps sending locations to the TomTom app. It is only something that can be resolved by TomTom, as this will have been a design decision on their side. Our partnerships team will reach out to their contacts at TomTom to flag this and see if a solution can be found"

That's frustrating, and very disappointing news. I hope W3W and Tomtom can fix this soon, otherwise I will have to bin Tomtom and switch to other apps that do support W3W.

I have the Tomtom Go Expert app and it works with What 3 Words.
Raesewell,

Thanks. That's helpful. How recently have you used W3W with the TomTom Go Expert app ?

Assuming W3W is still working with the TomTom Go Expert app it looks like TomTom has stopped people using W3W with the free TomTom app to try to you make you pay an annual subscription (currently £34 ?) to the use TomTom Go Expert App that does work with W3W.

I hope TomTom listens to W3W and turns the W3W interface to the free TomTom app back on. If not I guess the choices are :

- Stay with the free TomTom app with a high risk of being led to the middle of nowhere because of the post code-based destination data base, because you can no longer use it with W3W. That's happened to me many times, and not just in rural areas, it's not funny, and is potentially dangerous.

- Pay £34 per year to use the TomTom Go Expert App that does work with W3W and get 100% reliable navigation to within 3m of where you need to go.

- Bin the free TomTom app and use free Google that interfaces with W3W.

Does anyone have any alternatives ?

I tried it last night, and I do pay the subscription so not the free trial.
Thanks. I just wanted to make sure I hadn't jumped to the wrong conclusion.

For anyone who comes across this post after a Google search to find out what's going on :

W3W still works with paid for TomTom Go Expert app.

W3W used to work with the free TomTom app (ex. Amigo) but some time in the last few weeks TomTom has stopped it working. W3W is aware and is talking to TomTom.

IMO this is a backward step for TomTom that puts them at an immediate disadvantage to their competitors, and ignores the fact that the general public's expectations for the minimum requirements for a satnav have moved on from post codes. A good example is part of the "Arrival Information" provided for the holiday cottage we are renting this week. It includes the W3W address with the comment "this will take you straight to the driveway." i.e. we don't give out post codes any more so your satnav can take you to the middle of nowhere. The holiday rental company and its customers now expect to be delivered to the driveway. W3W is therefore now the basic minimum requirement for a satnav. It seems that holiday rental companies, among others, are more in touch with reality than TomTom.

Hopefully TomTom will listen to W3W and reinstate the W3W capability for the TomTom free app.

Just guessing, but maybe sum it up as aint.gonna.happen ?

Thanks Canderson.
I remember well when TomTom's Mapcode was supposed to be the hot, new thing, too. It was even released as an open standard, but it seems that never really went anywhere, either. They seemed to have lost interest for good about the time they dropped all custom POI support (anything after the GO 62x0 / Premium / Supreme era). Seems it's now only popular in parts of Africa and Asia that have poor or no street numbering systems.
