I know how to add my own POI category and all that. But with the new maps, you can have subcategories with their own icons. For example, in restaurants you can see icons for Outback, Subway, McDonalds, etc instead of the generic knife and fork.

Does anyone know how to create custom POI lists with more than one icon in the category?

Yes, I know how to do this as I do it all the time for the BUILT-IN categories.

First, you cannot change the icons for the built-in POIs. However, if you create your own POI with its own icon and link it to a built in category, your custom image will appear.

For example, a built-in category is "RESTAURANTS". Let's say there is a local restaurant called "CHARLIES" that you want to have a specific icon for.

Follow my instructions below to create a new POI and a custom ICON for the POI:
>>> Creating a Custom POI Icon <<<

Once you have your new custom POI and Icon, you can link this so that it shows up under the RESTAURANT category by following my instructions below:
>>> Link Custom POI to Built-in POI Category <<<

Now, this only works for linking other POIs into built-in categories as you need a category number in the *.inf file....haven't figured out how to have multiple images in custom POI categories but the built-in categories cover such a wide range, that I think most of the custom POIs you can generate will fall into one of the built-in categories and you can follow this method

Thanks! Not exactly what I was looking for, but it's a start.

Right now I have a separate .ov2 and .bmp file for each type of geocache (7 or 8 types, I think), and while it's not a big deal to create since I've automated it, it still clutters up the displays and lists. If I want to go to a specific geocache, I have to know what kind it is so I can look in that sub-category to pick it, etc.

I wouldn't mind loading them under a category I don't use (churches, casinos, etc), but then I have to remember where they are, and if I loaded some for a trip I have to use those instead, etc.

Thanks for the info.
