TomTom Model(s)
One XL
Hi I'm new here and I have a question or two. I have, or think I have as the device is currently in storage a TomTom one xl. We only really use it on long journeys and so is not really used a lot. Now later in the month we are driving to Spain (which we do yearly to visit parents) and I know the maps need updating as we didnt go last year and, looking at the prices it is going to be cheaper for me to buy a new TomTom which features lifetime updates on the maps. The one I'm looking at is the TomTom start 42 which comes with the full European maps.

Your one xl is considered End of Life by Tomtom (no more map updates).

Be aware that the model you are considering has problems if you try to search by postal code. Addresses won't be found. Tomtom is aware of the problem but who knows if the issue will be resolved.

Thanks for the quick reply dhn. Well that seems a bit unscrupulous on TomTom's side. The one is in perfect working order it has really only been used once a year to guide us through Europe and forcing us to upgrade the device is a bit of a douche move! I know it's an older device but it's in good order. With regards to the start 42 that wouldn't be a big problem as we only use it to guide us through France so it may be an option.

With all of the additional information they have added to the maps since your device was built (and believe me, it's considerable), there just isn't room enough to hold a map that covers the geography to which you're accustomed.
They could have continued with 'segmented' maps, I guess. That's where they would give you just a piece at a time of, say, Western Europe. But that would have been the only way to support these units that no longer have enough memory to hold a full map. In your case, with just driving UK/France, that probably would have been an acceptable solution, but producing a huge collection of smaller maps from which to choose just wasn't practical for the, I guess.
