Hi, I tried updating the maps to my Smart 55 in TomTom Home but had to install Eastern US and Canada maps as the full maps wouldn't fit. All seemed good but the install froze on the downloading maps part. I left it overnight as I didn't want to brick my device but still nothing happened. Had to close the update maps app as it was frozen and come to try again but now this map doesn't fit on my device. Looked at it further and realised that the Northern USA/Canada maps would fit. Downloaded that and it got as far as trying to install but failed at the borders.dat file. The folder was corrupted, all I could do was rename it. I then deleted the original Eastern_USA_and_Canada folder and unzipped the Northern file to the device. But now all I get is a flashing red X when I turn it on, have I totally bricked it?

Nope, it's definitely Home. I sorted it out though. Tried eveything and Home was telling me there were no updates, even after I deleted the map folder. But I had an old XL so I formatted the 55 drive, copied all the files from the XL and the maps were there to install and it works perfectly. I think the red X issue was caused by the corrupted folder that Home tried to install earlier.

Your Start 55, which connects to Tomtom Home, with a serial number starting with GU or GX, is no longer supported by Tomtom.

You were lucky to be able to reinstall the XL folders on your Start.

In my opinion, make a full backup of your Start 55 on your computer.
