TomTom Model(s)
Go 400
just moved from Garmin to Tomtom, I have a Go400 for my motorcycle, quite impressed after initially struggling with different menus etc. The only thing is I miss mapsource so was delighted to receive a code for a free copy of the Tomtom equivalent 'Tyre' unfortunately I used my code to try to download this but then found out it's not supported on a Mac! Gutted, I've used my code now so I can't put it on wife's Pc, anyway round any of this?

Continue to use Mapsource to generate your *.gpx files.
Then you can use the universal translator (even better than the one used on Star Trek) to create TomTom *.itn files from your *.gpx files, "GPS Babel". Available for Windows, OSX, Linus et al.
See here >> http://www.gpsbabel.org/download.html#downloading
If there's a GPS file format it doesn't know about, the author will be surprised.

I am astounded you moved from Garmin, being having helluvalot of trouble downloadin from Garmin on my GPS, and wrote and told them that I was switching to TomTom, and then I started reading about them tomtom that is, , slow slow software, screens dont respond, voice control operates with radio on, and worst of all NO SPEED CAMERA UPDATES, what a miserable bunch of money grabbing sellers, who I think are Dutch? , even if you pay for lifetime updates, NO SPEED CAMERA UPDATES, my flabber is gasted, guess what I,m sticking with,my GARMIN thank you very much, slow download or not, at least I get what I paid for, and no I cant download lotsa voices, what are you lot doing driving, or playing silly buxxers listening to Darth Vader, that are incompatible with your sat nav, altogether now, SWITCH TO GARMIN, and get SPEED CAMERA UPDATES WITH ONE PAYMENT

You are right of course, my rantings were based on a review of the go 6000, which didnt have updates.and the complaints from buyers who thought they were being used as guinea pigs by tomtom, the other complaint that arose was the policy of no refunds, but Garmin are the same in that respect
I forgot to mention the low battery life, slow start up,poor map downloads, voice operation very slow,no real improvement over previous model, My Drive "is the most ham fisted piece of software ever used! though!

Few if any use these devices when not connected to external power. Time to first fix (I assume that's what is meant by start up time?) isn't an issue if these are occasionally (every 5 days or so) connected for their QuickFix data or getting it OTA, but that's always been the case. Even after a week, it's not bad. Maps have been downloading fine - but when everyone is trying to download full new maps at the same time, it can get a bit slow. Except for Germany, everyone is in pretty good shape for voice control now. The only completely true statement in all of that is that these units are really taxing the CPU, and it shows up pretty clearly even in the basic UI. These devices are running at the limit of the horsepower they've got available. I doubt there will be any code optimization that will make a significant change to it at this point in the program, either. Sadly, I suspect that's one reason we might never see POI on the driving view map. It would probably slow down rendering too much.
