I know TomTom is having some server errors the past 24 hours or so.

Try the updating in a few hours or so and see if it goes any better.

I saw the same thing this morning. I bet there are thousands of people running "Latest Map Guarantee" after opening their Christmas presents.

Tomtom map servers don't scale well. In general, expect things like this on Christmas, Black Friday, and whenever new maps are released.

Applications updates and other "free" software are hosted on akamai so you'll have no download issues during those updates.
