TomTom Model(s)
GO 5200
When I input an address at home on my Tomtom 5200 I can see traffic information then when driving a minute or so my traffic is disabled. When I input a destination on my next trip there is no traffic information and then when I arrive home traffic information is enabled. It seems to work when I have Internet like at home but when the Internet is lost I also lose my traffic information. I have tried factory reset but this does not help.

SIM cards are disabled, you must connect your phone to your GPS to receive traffic information.

I am guessing that your 5200 is finding traffic from your home WiFi router, and you lose that connection when you drive away. As Willy says, you'll need to use your phone now to get traffic for your 5200. Create a WiFi hotspot on your phone, and connect to it with your 5200 for a reliable traffic connection. I prefer that to Bluetooth for stability.

If I connect my TomTom to my phone using a hotspot, do I have to run a traffic app on the phone in order to get real time traffic updates or is the mere connection enough to get the TomTom to find traffic. Sorry if this is a stupid question but 30 years of TomTom automatically doing traffic has left me out in the wilderness now that it has gone

No, you don't need an app, you need to connect your GPS to your phone's wifi.

To receive Tomtom traffic, you need to connect your GPS to your phone either via Bluetooth or use a Wi-Fi hotspot on your phone.

So do i need a traffic app running on the phone or does the Tomtom receive traffic info via the hotspot wifi

One more time. All you need is connectivity. If you didn't need to drive to get practical use from your TomTom, you could connect through your home's WiFi router instead of your phone. NO app needed on your phone. JUST configure your phone as a WiFi hot spot and connect your TomTom to that.
