Tomtom rider 2ND edition starts after charging but screen goes blank when memory card is inserted after prompt from startup screen.

What happens when it started up with the card already installed?

Bummer. OK -- have you ever backed up the content of your SD card? It contains ALL of the firmware and maps for your unit. But first -- can you read it in a PC successfully? Directories and files look normal?

I bought the unit second hand, unfortunately never backed up the unit, can read the memory card on my laptop but wouldn't know what to look for if I had a problem.

Let's start from the beginning, and see if we can't resurrect this thing. BTW, did it ever work after the purchase?

We need you to drop that SD back into your PC and for you to look for a folder called UK&ROI or similar that contains your maps .. unless you had all of Western_Europe, in which case, you're looking for a folder with a name similar to that. If you can take a snapshot of most of the content of your map folder, we can at least establish if those appear to be intact. If they are, then we can recommend exactly what to delete (and what NOT to delete!) on your card so that we can reload the firmware and other ancillary bits and pieces from scratch to see if that helps.

The BIG thing is making sure the maps at least appear to be intact. We'll be looking for some largish files with names like cline.dat, cnode.dat and cname.dat.

The unit worked OK from when I bought it, I will not be able to check SD card until weds day eve I'm on nights today.

Understood. We're running a strange schedule here this week, too, so we'll just catch up to each other as possible.

Found all the above files still on the SD card

Excellent. Sorry for the delay. Been busy like you can't believe here!

OK -- Here's what I would ask you to do.
First, copy ALL of the files and folders from the SD card to a 'safe' folder somewhere on your PC. You need to have 'hidden' files exposed during the copy. The process we prefer is outlined here >>> https://www.tomtomforums.com/thread...-to-the-computer-and-how-to-restore-it.17864/

Only after you have succeeded in that, delete all of the 'loose' files that reside in the root of the SD card -- NOT any of the folders.
Then use Home to update the SD card. It will offer to provide you with new firmware for your device (which makes sense, since we just had you delete it!). Accept this update.
After doing so, it may offer to update yet again. Continue until it has updated all that it can.

Once done, resinstall the card in your device and see if it boots correctly.
