Tomtom One Version 2(New Edition) Battery replacement

Failing battery is indicated by no switch on when disconnected from car lead, and a long time before switch on becomes possible when connected. For obvious reasons, manufacturers are shy of mentioning the fact that, for all their virtues, Lithium Ion batteries have a relatively short useful life irrespective of how they are used and recharged.

A new battery can be bought for under ?10 in the UK. and no doubt equivalent amounts in other countries Do take care to get the right one as there are differences of battery size for the various Tomtom navigators.

The following procedure can be a bit scary as the Tomtom is a complex, densely packed electronic device. The trick is to use sufficient but not excessive force during dismantling to avoid fatal damage.

Please be clear: You follow this procedure at your own risk It worked fine for me.

The good news is that no soldering is involved.

Battery Replacement Procedure

1. Remove the four Torx size 8 screws from rear using a proper Torx bit.
2. Remove the SD Chip from its slot.
3. This is the scary bit!! Starting near to the top, carefully insert a thin blade knife, between one side of the black back cover and the silver front to a depth of NO MORE than 3 to 4mm. Start to prise the back cover away. Continue working down the side. Repeat for the other side. If necessary also prise at the centre of the top. The rear black cover will be released. Take care not to pull it away, as there are two sets of wires with miniature connectors, connecting the battery and loudspeaker on the back cover to the main unit.
4. Gently disconnect the two small connectors making a note of which plug goes in which socket and which way round. (usually loudspeaker is the upper one with red wire upwards and the battery the lower one with the red wire downwards.. A pair of thin pliers is helpful for this. The back cover can now be removed away from the main unit. Handle the main unit with great care laying it aside with the screen downwards.
5. The battery is secured in its recess with a very sticky pad underneath. Bend a length of stout wire into a small hook, and file the hook end flat rather like a screwdriver. Hook under the battery and gradually pull the battery away working from side to side. Don?t rush this or damage to the back cover could occur. Retrieve the sticky pad for reuse, replacing it in the recess.
6. Push the new battery into the recess making sure the lead exits the recess at the bottom (loudspeaker side) corner.
7. Carefully reconnect the Loudspeaker and new battery plugs to the main unit the correct way round. At this point it is a good idea to connect the open unit up to a pc USB port for a couple of hours to charge the new battery, and then to insert the SD card and switch the unit on. Operate the unit using the Tomtom utility to make sure all is well. Disconnect the device (don?t forget to click Disconnect on the utility before unplugging). Remove the SD card and the USB cable.
8. To replace the back cover, hook the USB connector into the bottom of the back cover, then making sure the two leads don?t become trapped, press the side with the aerial socket into place and then the other side. Replace the Torx screws. Insert the SD Card.

Job Done.
